If I understand correctly, it sounds like it is proprietary connection for the Elektrons (via Overbridge USB mode or a new mode) and for everything else, if it does that, probably dependent on how the source device outputs multichannel USB audio. Maybe there is software to do assignments for the latter, or maybe it just assigns one per channel the way it would on a computer etc.
Great Idea, but it shouldāve been an In/Out-Device, rather than an Out-Device only. This unnecessarily limits itās possible use-cases.
For example: I would love being able to hookup a lot of external Gear to a single Elektron Device. I dont have a Mixer, so i cannot benefit from physically separating the Outputs of a single Elektron Device. And with OB, this isnt even necessary as we have it all where we need it already - in the DAW. Having a way to configure this Deviceās Outputs to Inputs would open up a world of possibilities to use Elektron Machines as a center Hub for every Dawless Session you can dream of. Right now it sadly looks like a missed opportunity to me.

Itās awesome that Elektron now offers such addons. However, Iām rather team Inbox 8.
The MAT 16x8 might work well for your use case too when itās available.
wow yeah, this is pretty crazy. heās saying you can also output cv. can think of a million ways to use this with my modular + dn/a4
Iāve been wanting exactly this (ok, maybe more outs, but whatever) for a while now. Insta-buy. Thank you Elektron.
I donāt have any proper knowledge about electronics, but did some digging on latency recently regarding RMEās Totalmix and external converters. And due to this it seems very much plausible to me that there will be only minimal latency if the Outbox8 is connected to the Elektron devices using a proprietary protocol. I canāt find the exact post in the RME forums right now, but Totalmix only needs a few samples for its routing duties. And a DAC doesnāt add much either, the Cirrus Logic DAC (CS4365) in the old Ferrofish Pulse 16 for example takes only 7.8 samples (0.1625 ms) according to their tech spec document.
I donāt think you can just easily turn every output into an input on a device.
I donāt think an Elektron box (apart from the Octatrack, I guess) would make a particularly good mixer. So I really donāt get this.
Possibilty to route a stereo input through distortion or compressor or simply some send fx is always useful, isnāt it?
Or route tracks through analog filters (A4/AK and AH).
Indeed. And to be honest, if it holds true this is preferable over class compliant multi audio USB out (e.g. without Overbridge) for me anyway.
Not to get off topic, but I have always felt like they could try to do parameter scene mixing over sysex a la Octatrack in a proprietary device & USB mode. Have attempted to do that over DIN MIDI or USB MIDI; itās too much CC data in my experience and a bottleneck. This device is another step closer in that direction anyway.
I am curious how did team Elektron use it at superbooth, how did they bus their devices?
hmmm⦠this sounds like a tasty weird device. Especially if it works with non-Elektron devices
OGDT getting firmware update? ![]()
Definitely interested in this for my Tonverk, keen to learn more about the CV outputs.
Seems a cool idea but i donāt see any specific use case that would benefit my workflow
Maybe i misunderstood it
only devices that already implement class compliant multitrack. So it could do that for OP-1F or the SH-4D for instance.
Instead of inbox 8 they should just make tonverk and digitakt ii/any other future samplers have the audio hosting directly onboard to sample or independently route specific tracks like MPCās do. Otherwise itās just a shitty mixer.
I agree. The Outbox8 is certainly an insta-buy for me, even though I plan to have a go at using Overbridge at home when Iāve found the time to set up my new RME + Ferrofish combo. But depending on how stable Overbridge is in my particular setup, using the Outbox8 might be a preferable option even at home.
That probably depends how they transmit controller data in Overbridge. If they use something proprietary instead of MIDI there (like NI with some of their DJ controllers, iirc), something like that might be theoretically conceivable as well.
