If my Tonverk becomes Overbridge host I would still get the Outbox for my Syntakt, it’s great as a standalone groovebox but its lacking in the effects department (compressor, chorus etc…), this solves it. Combined with the latest Twinshot update, Syntakt is getting awfully close to unlocking full beast mode. Just give us 128 steps and it’s a homerun.
They did not. I talked at the Elektron guy about my hopes and dreams for a bit but ultimately it wasn’t anything Elektron could share any info on today.
It’s a sign. Saying nothing is saying everything.
Non rubber button replacements, samples on Syntakt, multi sampler/granular/wavetable with multi fx and now an OB breakout option! Gee, what’s next, a Motorola chip emulator? A standalone crossfader for every box? Candy for breakfast?
I‘m still not sure I understand completely, but I‘m pretty sure this is what I‘ve been asking for as a digi feature for years: an extra pair or two of outputs that aren’t fixed to individual voices but can carry whatever source you want to send through it. Makes a lot more sense for how I‘d use hardware outputs, if I really need individual tracks for recording, I will just use OB for that.
I think TV means I don’t need this device, especially if it gets OB multitracking. But I‘m really happy this thing exists. And that the news sounds like OB for TV is a lot closer than I had expected.
All of that being said, I still think OT secretly handles this stuff the best. Yes, it only has one pair of cue outputs, but being able to route a signal there and back to master with just fct+track right there on the front panel was a dream for how I used it as a way to route in and out of FX pedals.
I’d get a couple of outboxes for DN2 and Syntakt but I really really hope outbox can use a USB hub to handle multiple USB devices at once and merge some tracks from each onto busses together.
I’m a little confused by this - could I
use this with just my DN/A4 mk1 to get individual outputs?
use this with just a laptop/ableton to get 4 stereo outputs?
My guess, no. It’s input will expect the elektron-proprietary USB data.
Hmm I was about to say I don’t think this would be possible because I’d inadvertently assumed the Outbox8 is a USB Device rather than a host. But engaging my brain, the DigitaktII is a USB Device so the Outbox8 must be a USB Host. So maybe they could make it take input from multiple Overbridge devices.
That really would be awesome if they could make that work. I’ll ask about the possibilities tomorrow.
use this with just a laptop/ableton to get 4 stereo outputs?
I don’t know if they talked about this specifically, but I am pretty sure it will work since they are talking about class-compliant stuff so it is not just for Elektron devices.
Possibly yes, and almost certainly yes.
I’m going from memory here but I think the Digitone and the A4mkI are both Overbridge capable right? If so, what I’ve been told is that it works with all Overbridge boxes. Although, based on the track assignment menu I saw, it looks like they would need a firmware update, and I’m sceptical about Elektron doing firmware updates for those older boxes. So maybe not?!
I was specifically told the Outbox8 will work with a computer or an iPad too as an output-only audio interface. It will definitely give you 8 mono outs from Ableton, depending on how you can do output assignment, I see no reason why it couldn’t function as 4 stereo outs, but I haven’t seen it in action to verify.
I’ll ask some clarifying questions tomorrow.
I see. It would work as an lfo destination, but not a p-lock parameter since you cannot get to that menu while holding a step, it’s that what you mean?
No. In the same way the sequencer, LFO etc can’t control any of the settings on the settings menus like which tracks are included in the master mix, they wouldn’t be able to control the menu that assigns tracks to Outbox channels.
can we use 2x for 16 out ?
Pretty excited by this. Breaking out channels of DN2 is very appealing. Im not into having the laptop involved so busting them out into a mixer into pedals to get more than the onboard effects on it sounds cool.
Don’t think so because one USB connection from one device. Would be better to ask if they have plans for an Outbox 16, but to get full use there it would also be more limited to Syntakt, DTII and DNII under the current lineup anyway. Unless it had two USB ports and you could mix and match or something. I can see why they went with the 8 especially if it is an entry to see how people respond. If the track assignment grouping works well, just throw all drums in one group etc.
Ok. I thought that was more a matter of a logical UI rather than a software barrier…
Anyway, really thrilled about the outbox. I was planing to sell my ST because of the lack of seperate outs. That might change now!
So could this give a device like OP-XY eight outputs? I guess not because there’s nothing implemented in it that allows to route to individual outs? Confused about this part.
Weirdly, I’d like something like this to use with Live 3 to output it into my Mackie CR1602. Yes, I can use any audio interface but a decent eight outs isn’t cheap.
