Has anybody heard anything about this?
Is this actually an 8-track breakout box for the overbridge powered/ class compliant Elektrons , or am I misunderstanding the discussion in the super booth thread?
dshipp posted details on this which looks well sourced from Elektron.
Here’s the Outbox 8 specific info extracted from my other post:
Outbox 8
8 x Mono balanced 1/4” jacks, one usb-c data port, one usb-c power port.
Works with any Overbridge compatible Elektron box, including the Tonverk by the time of release. They showed it with the Digitone II which had a new menu you select how you configure the outputs and what tracks you assign to each output. You can assign multiple tracks to the same output. You can use the existing menu to add/remove tracks from the main device’s master out. Outbox8 has no inputs. You can combine pairs of outputs into a balanced stereo outputs (max four), you can carve off outputs from the right hand side to be CV instead and there was a menu to select the specifics for CV.
Also out June, I think. There seemed to be a little confusing at the booth whether they release price will be €249 or €299.
I asked what the Outbox8 latency was like and I was told it’s exactly the same as the device’s own stereo out. So if you record both the output from Outbox8 and the stereo out and compare the waveforms they would be perfectly sync’d. I was really surprised by this and if it’s the case I’m impressed. I double checked that I’d understood correctly on this point.
As far as I know you can’t use multiple Outboxes on one Electron box, so think of this as buss outputs rather than individual track outputs. That way you won’t be disappointed by only 8 mono or up to 4 stereo outs. It’s nice that they’re balanced 1/4” outputs.
I was told the Outbox8 is essentially an output-only audio interface with Overbridge drivers built in. So you can also plug it into a computer or an iPad and you’ll have 8 outputs for that.
Obvious use cases are to have separate output busses for drums, lead, bass, pads, etc. You could separate the kick on a mono output, but also have it in a stereo drum buss with your other drums, so you’ve got an isolated kick for side-chaining into a master compressor. You could use Outbox8 outputs as FX sends off to pedals and then bring the returns back into your device’s audio inputs.
Feature request: P-lock output channel
So you can route to an external fx / eq / comp setting / channel per step…
Side note: I am so happy that Elektron is going deeper on accessories/add-on offerings. I really love their cables because it is difficult to find something braided/above average quality especially for USB-B, MIDI. We can add power cables to that list now as well.
With the recent button options I hope we see even more stuff as well in the future like faceplates.
Love it. Almost certainly not going to happen, as the track to channel assignment happens up in the settings menu system well away from any sequencer logic. It would be a pretty major overhaul of the architecture, across all but possibly the Tonverk, to make it happen.
You could however buy a cheap (ÂŁ30) matrix mixer from AliExpress and achieve that dynamic routability with knobs you can control live.
this is impressive and I am even more excited now
P-lock a CV to a Eurorack switch module.
That’s the make or break feature of the Outbox8
Thanks for getting all the details. The low latency makes this a much more ideal option than overbridge for me.
Impressive. Very nice
Tonverk as Overbridge host is the way, but in the meantime I’m all over this Outbox. Genius.
That was pretty much what I said to Elektron. The Outbox8 solves a problem but I might put it on eBay once the Tonverk gets Overbridge Host mode.
So for the CV outputs I wonder how this works for the older boxes. Can you use the MIDI track of the A4 to send extra CVs through the outbox? Or does this pretty much have no use on the boxes that already have individual outputs?
An Inbox 8 would definitely make me take another look at TV if you could use it as an 8 channel mixer/fx box.
Don’t really even need Outbox 8 for that. You can always use something like Befaco’s Midi Thing V2 to create CV from Midi CC.
This is great, instant-buy for me at that price range
Did they confirm that overbridge host mode is actually a thing for Tonverk? We all want it but it seems uncertain.
True, I have the Befaco VCMC which goes in the opposite direction. I have found it kind of fiddly to use though and of course it takes up some HP. Could be kind of nice to set everything up directly on an Elektron box and have all of your settings saved with the pattern and the interface is just a dumb box hidden out of sight.
