I came here to ask the same question.
It looks great, but on an iPhone screen? It looks like it can be irritating.
As someone who has used Drambo for a while, I find the iPhone usable if not ideal. I’ve built a number of patches on my phone.
But getting started with Drambo I’m glad I had an iPad to cut my teeth on.
It’s more comfortable on an iPad, but it is scaled really well on iPhone.
Drambo is fantastic, but even with an iPad I sometimes wish for more screen space. Still, the UI is very well thought out.
A well thought out hardware home for Drambo (Drambox?) similar size to an OT could indeed be an OT killer, but IMO it’d still need an iPad / computer editor along the lines of the Nord modulars. Would be quite a challenge: E.g at least 16 pages compared to the OT’s 4.
I use my phone to build patches and templates. 2 things that help you navigate the small screen are foldable sections, and to place a knobs module at the front of your patch connected to the parameters you change the most (cutoff, ADSR etc)
One of the best parts of Drambo is that it uses AUv3s. A standalone box would miss that.
I just pair Drambo with a midi controller. Currently that’s an OP-1 Field
This is so true it’s actually hard to admit. Especially if you make expensive hardware that does a similar thing
Good point. I almost always use AU3s in Drambo.
@echo_opera Nice! Very helpful, thanks.
I had a question on Discord about Randomizing FractalBits in Drambo and i suggested using FlexiSampler and here’s the overview on how i would do it:
This is awesome - thanks for sharing. First I’ve heard of fractal bits too so I defo will be downloading this (and copying this technique)
Great to hear. Be sure and use this technique with any sound as well
So… I’ve never used any ipad anything for making music, but if I wanted a fun all in one app to make music while I am away from the studio is this the one to get?
Maybe, depending on what you want, how much time you want to invest.
There is a learning curve, like picking up any new DAW. If you’re looking for something to just pick up and go, there may be some better options. But if you’re willing to invest the time, it can do a whole lot. I’ve found Drambo as a great central rig to consolidate working in the iOS realm.
There’s also some great resources in this thread, and on YouTube.
I’ve no idea about IOS specs. What’s a good entry level IPAD that can both run Drambo and others while not costing a grip?
Anything in the current lineup will have you covered, even the base model.
I run Drambo on a 2017 iPad Pro and can easily throw a handful of AUv3s at it without it balking. It even runs (albeit with a steep limit on plugins) on my 2013 iPad Air!
Man I don’t even know what’s what. I searched 2017 IPad Pro and got a huge range. What’s up with the generations category? Does a refurbished one going for $180 seem too low? Wish they had years attached to the titles.
You want the best processor u can afford. The “pro” moniker is for other features that really aren’t gonna benefit audio applications much.
Biggest things you wanna concider 1st is do you need a headphone jack or are you fine with a audio interface/usb-c dongle
