Bi-weekly record-diving sampling extravaganza | 43 | Lionel Richie - Truly

woh, hold on… is that…

YES, it’s only a bloody bi-weekly record-diving sampling extravaganza!

It’s been over a year since the last brief, but I’ve had a few messages about reviving the format and with the HipHop Battle Resurrection it felt like the right time.

This brief is in honour of @aarb420 - who has been AWOL for a long while now, but I’m hoping that wherever he is he’s crate digging and thinking of us.

The sample this week is Lionel Richie - Truly .

“Truly” is the debut solo single by American singer-songwriter Lionel Richie. Richie wrote the song and co-produced it with James Anthony Carmichael. Debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 on 9 October 1982 and climbed to No. 1 on 27 November – 4 December 1982. It also spent four weeks at No. 1 on the adult contemporary chart, and logged nine weeks at No. 2 on the R&B chart, behind Marvin Gaye’s “Sexual Healing”. In addition, “Truly” made the top 10 in [the] United Kingdom, where the song peaked at No. 6. The song won a Grammy Award for Richie in the category Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.

Recorded directly from a Motown 7" 45 by yours truly. Here is an MP3 to make it easy to share here on the forum.

If you’re desperate for a .wav then let me know as I do have one. You can also use any other recording you can find as long as it’s the same version of the track.

THE BRIEF
YOU have been selected by the notorious Global Sound Syndicate for a top-secret operation. Not really, please, share with your friends, family and Armen’s Repair Shop - let’s get the message out far and wide.

  • Sample any part(s) of the track we’ve nominated
  • Spend no more than 1 week turning it into music/noise
  • Post your creations here for us all to enjoy

You can use as much or as little of the track as you like - add whatever other instruments/samples you like. No winners, no losers, just good times*

DEADLINE Friday, September 12th, 2025
Submit your entry no later than 11:59 PM, Friday, September 12th, or be faced with a brief moment of regret. You could also submit something after that date too, we’d still like to hear what you make!

COMPENSATION
Hearts and compliments from the community*

Enjoy yourselves and join us in the chat for existential crisis, high-fives and advice! :raised_hands:

Lots of love, @natehorn and @aarb420

Will try and get in on this one if I get the time - still acclimatising to my MPC Live III so it would be a good forced learning exercise :v:

Not my official entry.
But a little AI stem separation and some remixing, leaving the orchestra out and boosting the almost unheard guitar … and giving the vox the ole’ Barry White treatment… crazy. (LogicPro / SoundToys / Fabfilter)

A couple hours with the Octatrack

Lionel:
Little backwards sample from beginning of the track
The other chops, piano etc from around 45sec in

Other stuff:
Droney bass thing from holding the 1/8 connection of the y cable I used to sample from my phone with my fingers
Drums:
Rimshots, claps and ‘808’ from MFB-522
Other drums chopped from the beginning of The Plane by Doug E. Fresh
Started going through 80s rap records and sampling open drums, this one happened to be on OT and hadn’t been used yet
I guess there’s a random hi hat on eighth notes too (used it as my click, then turned it way down and forgot about it, then didn’t sound right when I took it out)
The synthy sound is from the Proteus 3 which my friend lent to me for a bit, never used a rompler before so just cruising through presets so far. Pretty soon I will be the editing rompler on lcd screen meme tho

I’m not really sure what this even is.
Messing around with a random bit of vocals a bass note and a piano line in Bitiwg.

Managed to cook up something a bit better:

It’s all made of the track other than the kick and bass which are Kick3 and Sublab.

All made in Bitwig.
