Already have an A4, do I still need to buy the TD3 MO?

I already have an A4, which I use with my Digitakt and Behringer’s RD-6 to make some demos. I recently saw Behringer’s TD3 MO, which is a bass synthesizer, and I like its sound. What I want to know is, can the A4 completely replace it? In terms of sound, including the acid sound of the TD3 MO, can I get most of its sound style on my A4? Do I need to buy another TD3 MO? Has anyone used (or owned) these two at the same time and can give me some advice? Thank you very much.

You don’t need anything. What you should do, is attempt to recreate the TD3 sound with your A4 and answer the question yourself - only you will know if it is close enough to the TD3 sound for you, or if you will need the other device.

I have tried some modulation, but maybe it’s some psychological factor, I always feel that something is missing.

Personally I’d buy the acid box
You can spend weeks trying to get acid sound or spend a bit of money and it becomes much much much easier and quicker

Time is money

Or use one of the free 303 websites / apps , make samples and dump them into you digitakt

Nothing is going to sound as much like an actual 303 as a 303 clone. Behringer’s TD3 is perhaps the best bang-for-buck clone out there. The MO version, due to the mods, is likely to sound less like an actual 303 than the stock TD3 does, which is no bad thing.

Another excellent 303 clone is the Cyclone Analogic TT-303 Bass Bot, which is a phenomenal 303 clone with fun generative pattern capabilities that exceed the TD3. It’s more expensive than a TD3, but is designed to be a modern version of the device, rather than a pure copy. I prefer the TT-303’s appearance, feel and generative capabilities to the B.

I love the rubbery, squelchy 303 sound, but don’t want it in my music because it’s sooooo overdone! So I compromised and got an Erica Synths DB-01, which is similar enough to evoke the same feelings but different enough to sound like its own thing.

Which brings us full-circle - perhaps the A4 can provide you with the ‘close enough but different enough’ feelings that the DB-01 provides me. If not, I wish you the best on your search! Everyone needs a 303… Kinda.

Here’s acid with filter overdrive (and the 2nd filter to remove low-end to make place for the bassdrum) on the A4 :wink:

It works definitely better than on the Rytm, where there is no filter overdrive (thus, overdrive is in the wrong place) and now way to remove low-end (since no second filter). I do have a TD-3-MO, but I can’t be bothered to actually use it.

Thanks guys, I decided to buy another TD3 MO since it was so cheap and it comes in yellow.

TD-3 MO is such a cheap box that everyone should have one. The devilfish mods take some getting used to however, an MO does not handle identically to an unmodded 303. The envelopes are unlinked on a devilfish, also the parameter ranges are altered. But if you internalize all the info on the og devilfish manual, you will be able to recreate unmodded 303 lines with a devilfish/MO with no problems. So while you might lose out on the “all sweet spot, all the time” nature of a 303 by going for the MO, you will win on the sonic pallette in the long run.

While A4/AK is a great bit of kit, I personally have not been able to recreate that gurgling teebee sound one can get with a devilfish/MO by messing with the filter FM. Sending CV to an MO from an A4/AK might get freaky tho… :wink:
