No but Melda has MMAnalyse which can do this
Yes I know it and I have tried others too, itās just that I like to have all the effects in the Ableton rack bar, no floating windows usually
With all the hoopla about the new OP-XY, I found this cool video covering a sort of Performance mode in Live with an external controller.
Check it out:
What did you find the most interesting about this?
Iāve been thinking about a M/S processing workflow and itād be great to not worry about 3rd party options.
Iām sure Iām due for a āonly use the in-box toolsā series of sessions to help speed up and declutter my brain.
There were two goals:
- Teach my friend whose track I mixed. If Iād use my regular set of plugins he couldnāt open the project and learn from the mix.
- I wanted to prove that I can mix on push in standalone if needed.
I achieved both of these goals.
Depends on what you want to achieve.
M/S processing is just a tool which you use when you need M/S. A lot of projects can be mixed without using M/S.
For this project I used some M/S eq8 instances because I couldnāt change sources, and tried to fix some issues in the mix. Works like any other M/S eq.
āSpeed up and declutter brainā can be achieved when you know your tools, no matter if these are bundled or external tools. Just choose 1-2 different EQs (clean and precise like ProQ, Frequency, EQ8 or any other, and analog modeling at your taste like Pultec or GML models), the same for compressors and other tools.
Then use these tools until you can use them with closed eyes. If you find gaps, close them with new tools or replace one of existing, but donāt change your workflow just because of a new shiny thing. Then you will work fast.
However, that doesnāt mean you shoudnāt try new shiny things. Taste everything you want in context of experiments. Just donāt change your main workflow without particular need.
Voxengo has a really nice free MS encoder/decoder plugin, I use it a lot Voxengo MSED - Mid-Side Encoder-Decoder Plugin VST, AU, AAX
[edit] u basically sandwich any plugin with ecoder/decoder and it lets u use it as a mid side effect. you can also do it with ableton stock plugins but its a bit of a faff an the voxengo one is just a lot easier.
Did they ever integrate Driv into a generator/transformer
Why would you be using a 3rd party plugin instead of Utility in Live?
Just righ-click on Width, switch it to Mid/Side mode and choose which one you want to hear. Put one Utility with Mid and one with Side in Audio Effect Rack and youāve two parallel chains available to apply any FX processing to one or both, summed back to normal stereo at the output of the Rack.

Iām considering upgrading to Suite from Standard, primarily for Max for Live, Operator, Sampler and Roar. Going to wait for the capitalism day to see if it gets a price reduction and use it as an early Christmas present from the missus.
Iāve really grown to love Ableton after getting the Standard licence earlier in the year.
100% worth it for M4L alone!
Yeah that was my conclusion too. Iād very much like to learn how to work with Max myself, and being able to have it integrated into the platform I use already just seems like a good idea. I was considering going the PureData route instead, but thereās so many more freely available Max devices floating around to learn from that the cost seems negligible.
Think Iāll have to put a few textbooks on the wishlist at the same time though.
Oh, one question though.
I get a Max for Live license with Suite, which entitles me to any upgrades to Max for Live during the lifecycle of Live 12. When 13 launches, if I donāt upgrade, do I get future updates to Max for Live while still using 12? Or are updates to Max for Live tied to having the contemporaneous licence for Suite?
youāll have whatever bundled for as long as you want, currently itās Max 8 so youāll have that for as long as it works, and imo they support older versions horizontally too, like bug fixing etc.
btw if you do get the suite and want the full Max itās 50% off for Suite users, it has way more things and itās standalone you donāt need to open live > m4l device to use it⦠crazy software!
āElectronic Music and Sound Design - Theory and Practice with Max 8ā books are pretty good
Good to know, I had that one earmarked, and as well as one focused on building sequencers.
@alechko Sounds good, thanks. I didnāt know that about the price reduction, and that certainly makes buying Suite first a better value proposition.
Wavetable, Meld and Granulator III; Echo, Hybrid Reverb, Spectral Time & Resonator are not something to be missed, either
Now you mention it, Granulator, the reverbs and delays, and Echo are also a big part of why I want it. Since getting my 404 MK2 Iāve been doing a lot of back and forth processing between Live and the 404 and Iāve been annoyed multiple times in the last few months by going to grab something in the base toolkit and not finding anything.
I just checked and it was this Wednesday in November last year when they had the last BF sale. To be fair, that was based around the Live 12 launch, so things may be different this time. But itās close to that time of year so it wouldnāt surprise me to see their offers arrive soon.
i barely use Note but i love that you can preview songs without loading them. if Live could add that it would be amazing!!!
You and everyone else in this thread need to check this out!
Itās an app for organizing ableton projects, it loads the metadata and if you bounce an export in the project folder you can listen to it in MAKID.
and itās FREE
