Ableton Live 11

if you are on mac you can do that by using split full screen…

Oh definitely! It’s not even dongle hell at this point, this is what I meant, the USB-C to displayport/HDMI capability (cpu-bound)-

[M1 MacBook Air]: Maximum one external display
[M2 MacBook Air]: Maximum one external display
[M2 MacBook Pro]: Maximum one external display
[M2 Pro MacBook Pro]: Maximum two external displays
[M2 Max MacBook Pro]: Maximum four external displays

I think I can use my Cintiq as a tablet with no display, so that should get me by until I can save up next year for a M3 Air 15" (or whatever.)

I joined the Ableton Live club today.

I tried the DAW many years ago, and it did not click with my workflow. Also, I absolutely hated the color theme. A few months ago I tried a demo of version 11 and was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Also, the dark color theme option was more than welcome.

Overall, I probably will not use it much, but at least the option is now available in my studio.

A dream of what I’d love to see in a hardware synthesizer version of Ableton.

I use the dark grey theme on a WQHD extra wide monitor as well. Very happy with the space!

This could be the best thing since sliced bread, must try!

Hm video offline, app too it seems :frowning:

Damn, i was about to finish 10 years of sketches…

Went private, probably accidentally. If I remember (probably won’t) I’ll email the dev.

About Song Sketch – XY StudioTools this seems like a more expensive fancy-like version of it.

BTW: I‘ve noticed that there actually is an updated version of the Instant Haus M4L device included in Ableton’s Max for Live Essentials pack. It doesn’t include any samples (you would have to use drum racks), but the gui is updated and it supports push 1/2.

I like the individual swing and shift settings…really cool.

That’s odd, especially since I think it just came out (I found it being shared online a few days back). Also weird that both Song sketch looks quite good, although the difference in price is pretty big. Maybe the chap is updating his version?

Thanks for this. I’m still unable to access the older packs with me starting on 11. I was also interested in one of the old sequencers which is also marked as dicontinued. Weirdly, Ableton does bundle some of the newer ones with Live which is a tad confusing.

Looking at this one again, there are some nice touches in the XY version, such as the ability to extract drums from racks into seperate clips with one click (though this feature can also be had for free here) plus the ability to customise and also upload your own arrangement templates. Apparently (though I haven’t checked this in detail) it also has the ability for you to choose sections and sub-sections of your track with clips (eg: roll a verse & chorus & variations into a single arrangement.) Whereas the $2 version doesn’t do any of that. What I like about this is that if you like an arragement you’ve heard, this would allow you to store a reference to how that track is built and try it on your own. I guess if you were doing that, you could go for the entry level one that comes with fewer stock arrangements.

Is it normal to have huge latency between the sound and the sequencer/meters? I suppose it´s because of the plugins, but it´s annoying, you can see the clap meter rise and the sound comes later.

I checked everything and I can´t find the reason, this doesn´t happen in Bitwig or Studio one…

It’s not normal to have huge latency but some is inevitable, there’s latency compensation baked into Ableton to make it easier to dial it in to a negligible degree though and plenty of tutorials on YouTube to help you find out how to use it and dial in the sweet spot for your needs, also make sure all your audio interface drivers are up to date, if you are on window that is…

This is ableton)
No GUI compensation, no PDC for transport depending plugs…

Seems a bit odd, what interface?
What’s your buffer size?
When hovering over the plug-ins, is one more hit by latency compensation than others?

I tried even with 64 samples and 96kHz, no device in, reduced latency when monitoring set to on, plugin delay compensation on, etc. It happens when the project starts to have some plugins, such of Fabfilter and D16 and it seems to happen equal in every track.

As interface I’m using a Xone:96, but it doesn’t happen in other DAWs.

I hope Ableton people finally manage to deliver an acceptable product in terms of performance.

I would pull down the sample rate to 48kHz. 96 is really high and demanding.

Latency when monitoring IF you put plugins (in any tracks) with perceivable latency, is normal, in any DAW.

If you put a 1s latency plugin in a track, the monitoring will be delayed by 1s + the sound card latency.

The only way to avoid it is to listen via a direct output of the sound card, but in this case the recorded backing track (if any) will be out of sync in respect of you playing live.

When tracking you have to delete all the plugins with perceivable delay, if you just disable them, the latency is still there.
When mixing you can load any plugins you want and the tracks will be in sync.

I meant I tried at 96kHz as it’s supposed to reduce latency when recording, but I work at 48kHz, I just tried everything. In fact sometimes this latency is happening when I use a keyboard MIDI controller or the Launchpad, even I’m an empty project.

So I can understand latency when monitoring if I have lots of plugins but what about MIDI latency on an empty project? And what about sound not matching the sequencer or meters?

I think this didn’t happen to me in Ableton 10 but I’m sure it’s not happening in Studio One for example.

96KHz reduces just the sound card latency.
Supposing you don’t have any plugin loaded, with 96KHz you will have a very low latency, probably under 6ms, that’s fine and not perceivable by most people.
Usually people start perceiving latency when it is over 10ms.
If you experience this issue only in Ableton live, probably you have something wrong in your software settings.
