It needs to be on out. So it seems its the Volca FM2 with the issue. Tried a couple other synths and the midi out from the L6 works fine. I’ll have to look into the Volca issue, channels are set right. Anyway thank you for your assistance.
That sounds…unusual. part of the 32bit gimmick is the 'no gain needed" thing. Could maybe have been a defective unit or driver error. Hope you find something else that works for you
Anyone tried the overdriving the preamps for good/bad overdriven tones?
Mine arrived today and just wondering if anyone had found a suitable portable case for travelling? I know Zoom will be selling one, but just curious if there’s a third party one that might work well?
Thanks!
Just wondering how you’re getting on with it? Was gonna order one as a smalller replacement for my R-24 as a live-with-recording mixer. Seems so small and neat but wasn’t sure if it would be as straightforward to use.
I absolute love it so far. Very easy to use indeed. All very straightforward in the arrangements of knobs and so on. Very easy to record and access the files, etc. Going to use it for the first time tomorrow for a live show in Brighton so that’ll be the real test!
Nice one. Reassuring.
Mine arrived last week. Everyone’s use case is different but for me, I plugged in a synth and drum machine to stereo ins, plugged a sampler to 2 mono ins and one send out, and sent my iPad to the 2 digital stereo channels.
After that it worked. Incredibly simple.
Just as a side note, the send output volume is really good, much better than the bluebox or tx-6 (both of which require a bit of setting up to be in the above configuration).
I would still be really curious how it performs as a headphone amp.
Received it. Kind of underwhelming experience so far:
- no TRRS for headsets (I mean: podcast?)
- not much use out of midi
- no setting of sampling rate in the software
- built in FX do not sound musically to my ears
- 32 bit, but (edit:) I made it clip easily while live jam
- USB doesn’t work with my proper USB microphone
- sound is clean (not in a good way)
- sound appears much more narrow, less transparent and less „threedimensional“ to my ears (direct comparison of the output of the respective machine)
It might have its advantages to the only other battery mixer I know (Behringer 1002B or so). but doesn’t add so much utility. Recording feature is all channels dry.
Can’t point my finger to it but the Yamaha USB 24/192 mixer (A something 06) sounds better to me.
Sigh. Would have been nice. Will wait for another volca mixer (3.5mm).
Maybe I am just in a critical mood. Please change my mind. I‘d love to love it.
Maybe it’s just the monitor/headphones out.
How in the world do you get this thing to clip?! Not my experience by far.
Only the XLR inputs have dual converters. Were you testing those or the TS inputs?
Very few devices are USB Hosts, and those that are, typically use type-A ports for that. Teenage Engineering is the only exception I can think of.
Blast Beats single outs over input 1, 2. Still trying to figure out if on input or internally when master too far or EQ too high (or just my expectations - infinite headroom with 32bitfp)
Btw.: the manual mentions that it can sound clipping but lowering volume should solve the problem.
- not something I would want to use if I already have a professional 300$ mixer… But would probably be useful in a pinch, so I could see a use.
- why?
- yeah that’s a miss on their end
4)fair, especially with reverb I feel it’s often a really personal thing. - that one confuses me. Sure it’s not the mics themselves? Did you lower the wave of the recordings in a DAW to see if it’s still there?
If it’s the mics no recording tech will help, since microphones have also their limits. - that one’s on you, it never mentions usb host functionality and that’s rare to get. Simply not how usb on devices works.
- clean in transparent? Or thin? Lack of colouration?
- that one I don’t understand.
To bad if it’s not satisfying to you. For the clipping I would check if it’s a) the recording that needs adjusting, or b) if it’s maybe the mics that are at their limit physically if you’re doing blast beats. The interface should not clip
I am curious to hear more about euro level recording through the 1/4” jacks. They are electrically rated for a nominal signal level of -10dBu. 32 bit does nothing to address the signal level the converters can tolerate.
Thx for your point by point comments :)
2 AFAI understood: no midi clock sync except for delay (at least according to manual). Since it doesn’t allow track by track recording, it wouldn’t help so much, because it can only record all at once.
4 will test. Was just surprised that I made it clip (monitor outs) while jamming, had hoped for infinite headroom and no thinking about gain staging when live.
5 I know, would have been nice, since it doesn’t have a built in mic, has no 3.5mm TRRS connection for headset or their own small clip on mics. Don’t want to carry kgs of cables and a Sure SM58 just for voice over.
6 clean in like early digital photos, no noise, loss of dimensions. Like reconstructed (it is not, just sounds that way - to my ears).
7 there is a sound to everything beyond specs. Maybe something in ultrasonic harmonics or so. The minilogue OG has it, the XD doesn’t. Arturia digital synths don‘t have it. Many synths with bad DAC have it DX7, DX100. That transparency/air somehow gets lost. Maybe just filtering frequency spectrum. After all, it’s a digital mixer (I do have old tascam and Ibanez mixers for everything else but they are bulky). Digital can sound good, though. (Elektron digital boxes).
I will see: whats on the record, and how it sounds as i/o. And maybe I find useful settings or get used to it. But I need to connect to the sound of a piece of equipment through my headphones.
Ah ok, the clock sync. Many pointed that out, I’m mostly interested for the midi por performance reasons (modulation -> midi -> pan, volume, EQ)
Essentially faux tremolo, sidechain, auto pan, etc.
Having synth a essentially be high pass filtered with the EQ on the midi track of the kick and stuff.
Still not sure how good it actually works, don’t have one.
4: yeah, it’s a nice idea, but for close mixing drums, there just is a limit on microphone show much they can handle, can’t find good sources now, but there are a couple threads. SPL and the pressure of the airwave could be to much, positioning should help if it’s that.
But before that: does the same thing work with a different mixer without clipping when properly gained? If so then it is the mixer.
Hope this gets cleared out, maybe the support can help. The big benefit of 32 as far as I understand is that nothing is lost and everything can be recovered, but if you need it live that’s still annoying.
5: lavelier mics or clip on mike’s are probably the better choice then, but I get what you mean.
6 ah. Interesting, I found digital photos till 15 years ago really noisy and full of artefacts. Not what I associate with clean.
7 hm… Is it maybe that you miss overtones from analog destortion? With some analog devices you get that, it essentially ads higher frequencies, which for some can make it feel more transparent/airy (also why chimes and stuff is used for air wind and ice in themes when composing).
Heck, the scarlet interfaces have a button on the front that does exactly that, “air” mode, adds back the harmonics of old analog Gear to the signal.
By definition that is less transparent, but everybody has a sound/vibe they are chasing, and the gear should help you get there. Saturators could help you once it’s recorded.
Same problem here. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be possible, which is a real bummer because, aside from that, I really love this little device. I’ve contacted Zoom and hope they will release a firmware update, but I’m not very optimistic. I don’t really understand this design decision, especially since individual tracks are recorded whether they’re muted or not when recording directly onto the SD card.
Thanks for the response. That is very disappointing to hear. Just to confirm, you are saying that the SD recordings are pre-fader, but the audio interface functionality captures each of the individual channels post-fader?
To my knowledge, yes. Individual tracks are recorded completely dry ( without effects ) and wether they are on mute or not. Only the master bus captures all the effects and respects muted states of individual channels. I have just double checked it by recording to the SD card.
