Surprised nobody mentioned invidio.us yet. Pretty good front-end for watching YT without getting battered by adverts every 20 seconds. Works through the browser so can be used on mobile and desktop. Sadly (unsurprisingly) YouTube are currently trying to kill it with law-fu.
Right, but is Aphex getting that money or is it going to the person who ripped the audio?
Odysee is another alternative that started as an anti censorship platform but has grown into something that goes beyond politics. There are even Elektron videos on there.
I am very happy to pay for YouTube Premium
I and my kids watch hours of it every day and it feels good to help to support the creators.
I begrudgingly pay for YT premium to listen to audio only versions of videos for stuff like podcasts and science content. I donāt find much value in the vast majority of synthtube content. Something rubs me the wrong way about a āmusicianā (hobbyist) with under 30 monthly Spotify listeners making 15-30 minute videos about why X manufacturer failed by charging too much about X product while promoting a Patreon. Iām probably getting old and cranky. The audio suggestion algo is pretty great if you use YT for music streaming. I like that I can make music playlists on my phone and play then on my Sonos system.
Aphex isnāt getting my money for Analord regardless because Iām not buying it on vinyl.
This is just an opinion but I donāt think theyāll follow Netflix policy on this unless content costs go up significantly. The reason I think this is that Google is primarily in the business of selling ads, more so than Netflix, and is incentivized to engage the maximum number of users with the platform.
There again, if content costs canāt be offset by subscription + ad revenues they could decide to either raise subscription and/or ad rates, or risk running off subscribers by adopting Netflix policy on multi-user accounts.
Everyone in the streaming business is having to delicately balance these issues and more to avoid subscriber losses. The consumer has never had it so good.
well, itās in the TOS so itās a matter of enforcement. you are correct, they are in the ads business but they donāt serve ads to premium accounts so thatās why imo they will start enforcing.
For years now Iāve been channel hopping. Netflix for a month or 2, then Amazon Prime for a month or 2, then Hulu or Disney for the same. None of them have a library of content thatās deep enough to keep me interested for more than that.
FWIW, I havenāt paid for any streaming services over the past 6 months or so and have been using Tubi and Roku for free. Both have a ton of old movies that I havenāt seen in forever (Iām 61yo and going through a nostalgic phase), and Tubi in particular because the ads are significantly less intrusive, plus they donāt throttle the volume on commercials like the other guys (that annoys the crap out of me).
Itās weird that weāre allowed to discuss getting YouTube premium for free but not software or music piracy.
(I use revanced on android and ublock origin on desktop)
I donāt equate the two. Advertising is a very strange thing that goes beyond simply watching them.
Although you can opt out of targeted ads, its still an extremely creepy process watching ads that are based on the content you choose to watch, especially knowing its part of a large cache of information that can better target your preferences beyond watching.
For software, I have yet to see it meet that level of intrusiveness
Playing devilās advocate here, but you can pay for YouTube premium to remove the ads. This money goes towards supporting the people making videos you watch (in theory), the same way your Spotify or bandcamp money goes towards artists, or software license keys go towards devs.
This is like saying that itās ok to pirate a vst because the hissing in the demo version is annoying
While I see the point with paying to remove ads (as I do pay for premium), I disagree with equating pirating to subvert demo limitations.
The developer is not earning money for every time a white noise hiss is played. Theyāre not earning any money from demos.
On the other hand, itās a reminder that in terms of social media, free is not actually free. Thereās a price to pay, whether you willing choose to do so, or even if you choose not to pay for premium.
Thanks this is very helpful. Tried it and I like it a lot.
I dont use youtube for music, nor following 'content creators ā I search for specific things. So this is great.
So does buying YT premium allow one to listen to audio when the phone is locked and no video is on the screen?
Itās great for looking up something when you donāt want to see 30 seconds of ads for irrelevant nonsense.
Yes.
Some others like this feature, but I hate it⦠Iām sure thereās an option to change it??? I havenāt looked for it yet, but I can confirm that locking it does not stop audio playback
YouTube Premium is worth it. Last I looked the majority of money they make from subs goes to creators. I think it was 55/45. This may have changed by now though.
As others have said, the way to remove ads is to pay for the content. Similarly, if there are some creators you like, give them money directly if they have avenues for that (e.g. Patreon).
