YouTube alternative?

Another option for ad avoidance would be to use a YT video downloader and watch the content offline. I’ve done this with quite a few YouTuber piano and organ lessons (not to avoid ads but because I’ll be watching these multiple times over the next few years and it’s more convenient).

Thats what I do. I pay the 19.99 pm to YT…they all have a payment setup to my bank account each month.

YouTube is a strange one because it kind of flies under the radar as a streaming service, but is used constantly by everyone. Once I realized that I actually use it more than Netflix and Spotify combined, I became a premium member.

Plus, you can run a clip while your phone is locked with premium. Really nice imo!

I think it’s a matter of time before they do the same as Netflix, they will stop supporting devices outside your house and everyone will have to pay for themselves.

Cross that bridge if I have to

3 in my crew are in same house though.

I always wonder how they plan to enforce these things. Aren’t there lots of parents that would still include their children in these plans when they’re in college?

I include my nephew on our Spotify plan and I plan to include him on YT Premium when we shutoff Spotify (switching to Google Music).

We consider my nephew part of the household even though he doesn’t technically live here, and I’m sure there’s lots of extended, or distanced families like this.

The amount and timing of YouTube ads gives me the eye twitch and causes increased risk of heart attack/stroke due to uncontrollable bouts of rage. I l look forward to bringing the case to court.

I believe netflix needs every user to connect through same ip address as the main account user once a month.

My sons use Netflix while out of the house and at college. But I believe they have to use the app on a phone or web browser on a computer. Fire sticks and smart TVs error out.

Got it. That sucks.

Was hoping you could get around it by just signing in for them every once in a while.

Well, I’m getting tired of Netflix.

Like others here, I’m watching more YT. We have Disney, Hulu and Netflix free from Verizon.
I just had to pay $100 for paramount to get Netflix for free. That’s still cheaper than their other plans.
Paid for Max too, but we won’t renew it.

Once the year is up, it’ll just be YT, and the free Disney/Hulu.

I don’t mind the YT fees at this point just because of what I’m getting from it in return (including occasional cat TV)

Do tell?

same way netflix did, I had a friend create a user for me in his account that I’ve used for years, one day I got the message saying that I’m not in the same house as the householder, I’ve had to do sort of pin verification that was sent to his email, but then it started doing it almost every day so I stopped nagging him.
anyway that’s how they do it, if you’re outside the same network or a device that was linked from the household network then they just block you and imo it’s a matter of time until YT does the same

something like that

Damn that sucks. Well, I’ll vote with my wallet.

When they had raised prices before, I simply dropped Netflix for a month, and the we were back to saving money on the year.

As soon as my free year is up, I’ll drop Netflix, likely for a year or longer.

I sincerely hope there’s a lawsuit to address families spread out at different times throughout a year. But as those things take time to see consequences, I imagine no improvement for 3-5 years.

Someone I know just takes NF for 3 months, then disney 3 months etc.

They just binge/watch everything they want during the few months on the “current subscription” then do the same with the next one.

Thats means that they only pay for 1 platform at a time but over the year can watch everthing across multiple

Yeah it can be a tricky one when stuff get’s expensive and these big companies are so impactful on our lives.

When you consider Blandcamp is $10 a month and what a piss poor job that does around building and sharing communities, and ultimately concerned about sales, YouTube’s model, as much as i hate adverts, seems much better value.

It’s curious how YouTube often gets a hard time, and Blandcamp gets praised. I wonder if YouTube was a smaller company, Blandcamp as large as Google, how the opinions would change.

I use Blandcamp and people who buy our music collectively pay thousands to them each year through their charges. That platform has barely been developed over the years.

Since watching, listening YouTube, probably my most watched platform, and now uploading studio explorations on our channel, it’s been a super positive and satisfying experience, connecting and learning together. I totally forget the advertisement issue since sharing premium with household.

It is a grind with so many platforms and fees, but it’s an interesting one to balance against each other and see what works and what doesn’t for your needs.

I should mention there is another platform Rumble, although not hugely familiar with it. I have an account and it’s not aa strict on censorship as YouTube, as far as I understand it.

I shared a Netflix account with a friend, then they started blocking it

Rumble is mostly political stuff from the people scared big tech will censor them. I watch stuff sometimes but its not got anywhere near enough creative/music stuff on it.

My biggest issue with YouTube is how it serves up content, algorithmic systems suck and it actively promotes only certain types of creators and more or less homogenizes what gets seen. Personally would gladly pay for a YouTube that didn’t serve content this way but the way it is now I would rather see it go away than give them money.
