Your Setups (Part 2)

lol, ok you took offence from a simple question that was neither meant to belittle nor aggress you but was out of genuine interest given the otherwise great gear you have there (which I’ve also explicitly stated). Maybe there’s a reason you love those Rockits? Maybe you figured for the size of the room they’re the right choice? I was interested in your decision making there given the rest of your setup.

mod edit: let’s stay respectful please

I have a set of Adam T7v’s that I use amongst various high end gear… Neve, SSL, Moog, Elektron, etc, etc… I have other high end monitors (Adam A77x’s, Dynaudio BM6a’s, Monro Eggs…) but there’s something about the T7v’s that I really like and they work for me, despite the relative low cost of them in the set up. There’s a reason people still use Auratones.
No need to be touchy on your choice of monitors. :v:

Not trying to stir the pot, but you gotta admit the original query was pretty cheeky in its tone. Essentially “nice setup, what’s with the shitty speakers”"

Remember the internet isn’t great at conveying subtlety. Maybe a smiley woulda helped…

Then responding with a classic take on “sorry you’re so easily offended” … :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Let’s try to stay respectful even when offended please.
Please assume snarky comments don’t let you appear more clever.
Comprehensiveness, in the other hand, goes a long way.

Hardly. If you read it that way ok, I can only tell you what I intended. Maybe a clarifying question would have allowed to clarify my question instead of leading with an outright diss, totally ignoring my question also. Alternative is, if the assumption is that it’s tongue in cheek or aggressive to just ignore it.

Whatever, no need to dwell further. May all be happy with what moves them.

Or no actually the frames for my 2 signed Dave Clarke collectibles, one from a meet&greet in Amsterdam 2013 which has all the dates i had seen him untill then, signed with ‘‘Dear Jan, thanks for being so loyal Dave Clarke’’ and a signed photo that came with the limited edition vinyl box released this year celibrating 30 years of the RED-series.

latest hardware bought was the Typhon last November, and this 3-piece is all i need for my Electro/Techno liveset project, wip, hope to share some stuff soon!

With all that amazing gear, why use Reason….

Sorry couldn’t resist! Lovely setup. Super clean (and to be clear, nothing against Reason or any DAW because they’re all great and horrible the same time).

Quite.

But hey-ho, moving on.

Simple fact is, they’re popular for a reason.

Loads of my friends have them, and I’d been suitably impressed before buying them. They’re affordable, sound more than good enough for my ears (and ‘keen’ hobbyist abilities) and I really don’t need anything else.

Other than that :man_shrugging:t2:

In my humble opinion the most important factor is your own familiarity with your monitoring (and gear in general). If you can hear what you need to hear and can drop mixes that translate, and make people jump and shake, anything will do!

Back on topic… I’ve got a new arrival coming tomorrow or maybe Thursday… It’ll go nicely with these - can anyone guess what it is?

not everyone upgrades their studio in the same order. and sometimes the availability of the items you’re after, and the funds you have for them, get in the way of doing what you’d prefer.

sometimes you see studios with $50k in machines running through $500 in mixing and monitoring, with zero room treatment. “serious” producers balk at this, but the person that bought it and owns it has no issues with it. and likely makes great music with it.

easy for anyone to have fault found with their setup, by someone. because we all approach this differently. that’s why we have a fun thread about it.

Not used reason (the software, or the mental process!) in years…

Basically dawless in the studio (other than occasionally taking a multi-track out of the mixer), or as a VST host, though I’ll still be sequencing from the Cirklons (often including the Elektron gear too).

I do have a separate ‘in the box’ setup in my office where Ableton is my weapon of choice, but that’s a whole other mindset and the two don’t really cross paths in my world.

I really love this setup. the cassettes and their shelving. the choice of VHS tapes to use for monitor stands. the awesome OT case you have. the use of both real and virtual modular. all of it. even the roll-top desk you’re not using.

but most importantly: is there more information about your OT in that case? did you start or contribute to another thread on it? is that a Makita case? do you perform with it like that? what’s the I/O on the top?

Nice! My setup is hybrid most of the way.

I do have BlueBox nicely attached to Moog trio, Pulsar 23, Make Noise desktop trio and bARP. It’s a great self-contained setup. Super quick to just play (so long as I haven’t removed the SD card from BlueBox).

Otherwise I use Push 3 with the modular rack, but that’s essentially a computer and a limited DAW.

Dave Clarke spotted. :sunglasses:

Love the XT.

Whatever.

Great, that answers my question, thank you.

Yeah no one’s business to find fault with anyone’s setup, they are personal and that’s that. But I guess that makes asking questions a bit sensitive for some? :man_shrugging:t2:

100%, and that’s always interesting to me to hear the reasoning why behind such choices/“discrepancies”. Because in the end no matter what amazing gear you buy, unless it is an acoustic instrument the sound will come out of the speakers (or headphones) you choose. So I find it interesting to hear why people choose what they choose.

I have an acquaintance here in Berlin who owns a commercial studio, million dollar setup, he’s been there for 25 years, he’s got a midfield system in there costing hundreds of thousands of Euros, yet he mixes on his og Mackie HR824s…ask him why and he’ll tell you they’re not ported and that is magic to him and his ears. To me they just sound ok.

I bought Dynaudio Air 15s with matching sub off one of the Booka Shade guys, he replaced them with comparatively speaking a budget system if I’m not mistaken…. he really lamented the downgrade but wanted the extra space & flexibility. it’s always interesting to hear why people choose the monitors they choose, not least because hearing and hence speaker choice is highly subjective & personal.

Hey thanks! i’m happy very happy with the space myself, after a few decades in leaky garages/sheds or cramped firetrap shared rehearsal rooms.
The case is a Ridgid brand toolbox, I found one years back in a pile of garbage someone dumped in the alley outside our rehearsal space. I screwed/glued in two pieces of wood on each side to accommodate the 19” rack format and mounted a digitakt/digitone combo in it. I eventually passed that rig on to someone else. Last year I came across another of the same toolbox at a thrift store. The octatrack has the rackmount kit installed, and behind it i have a 2U blank panel that i drilled holes in to mount a smattering of ⅛” and ¼” connectors that can be wired up in different ways as need. Nothing fancy at the moment, just brought all the octatrack IO out front. I installed an IEC socket with on/off switch and wired it to a small power strip that i stashed inside to power the octatrack, golden section and and ipad charger.
I have performed with it and carried it on a plane and it’s working out perfectly for me, and tho i’ve had the good fortune to stumble across two of these boxes for free/damn near free, i have a feeling they can be found with minimal effort and customized to anyones needs. The one thing i did have to do was saw out the permanent lid pins so i could replace with pull pins, as i wanted to be able to remove the lid.

also i’ll note that the rolltop is in use but not by me, it’s a 7 year olds “secret workspace” for drawing comics

I have the eurorack version (with a black panel) as a submix for all the rack gear on that side of the studio… Great bit of kit.
