Being Erica they’ll leave it unfinished anyways ;).
By the way, Cycle 5 has PWM on the square wave output if you modulate variwave (knob or cv input)
I get that this will certainly not be for everybody.
It is for me. I had to move on from my Perkons, as I didn’t have the physical space for it at the time and didn’t necessarily need the sequencer.
I absolutely loved most of algos, especially the wavetable drum. I wanted to be able to inject my own modulation into them and here it is.
The beauty of modular is that there is certainly something for everyone.
I think its going to be a popular module for sure
Perkon as a desktop drum machine isn’t appealing to me but I could use it in eurorack format as a drum voice that has algo and patches. A pity it is just one voice and I surely cannot afford multiples of it in both space and intended budget. An easy skip.
After a long summer on the road, I’ve just moved to Portland, Oregon, home of the Portland Synth Library. They have a lot of great gear available to borrow for a small fee, including several small modular systems donated by members over the years. This works especially well for me, as I really wanted to get fully into modular after years of playing with Moog semimodulars, but the job hunt isn’t going very well. So this way, I get to play with a bunch of modular gear and have a much better idea of what I want when I have music money again.
For my first pick, I chose this Schlappi Engineering skiff:
- Three Body
- Boundary
- Angle Grinder
- Interstellar Radio
- 100 Grit
So far, I’m really enjoying this system. The Schlappi design ethos seems to be building up complex, multi-function modules based around very simple functions that combine in unusual ways (e.g., every VCO in Three Body or Angle Grinder can also be an LFO), which makes them very fun to patch and modulate.
Since I only have the skiff for three weeks, my plan is to set it up with my Moogs, record the hell out of it, and come away with an EP’s worth of music.
I’m jealous (even though I have a lot of modular)! So nice that you can borrow that to take home like a library book (I visited something similar in Prague, but one had to use the equipment on site). After springing for Three Body and being quite taken by it, I want to try the other Schlappi modules, but it may be a while before I can manage it.
Very pretty. One-color racks should be the law. What case is that? Moog?
Built this for someone a while back, but then we realized the PCB stack was a fraction too deep for his case. It’s been sitting at the back of a shelf for a while.
It’s a fully functional VCO (VCO and LFO modes, FM, etc.) followed by a clock conditioner and divider, then a control section (using manual button or pulse input) that includes latches, inverted latches, momentary pulses that can be used internally or with external modules.
The idea is that this would be used as a clocking module, that can be started and stopped with buttons or pulses at will, but also be used as a VCO when a clock isn’t needed.
One of the things I like that you can do, is take say step 5 of a sequencer, and run it into the pulse input. The patch the latch out into the VCO sync input in this module. Then run the VCO’s sine output into the FM input of a separate VCO. What happens is every time step five is hit, your audio VCO will be FMed, and then when it is hit again, the FM stops, and you have a pure tone. You can turn the modulation on and off rhythmically like this. If it’s also patch into the logic module, then you can have multiple steps conditionally turn the FM on and off.
Or you could use it to start and stop an analog sequencer, or do manual step-advance, etc.
Update: I paired my Schlappi loaner system with my Matriarch. Three Body sounds amazing through delay and Angle Grinder makes a surprisingly good phaser. Modular is fun!
I really miss my Three Body…not much else compares.
For the last few months the only music I have listened to with any frequency is that generative ambient modular stuff on youtube. Where the video is just the modular doing its thing with a background of plants or whatever lol. I’m starting to think it might be my favorite genre of music :-/…
Maybe I just need to make a little generative ambient setup and cut out youtube all together. Just set up a patch or two every week and let it play while I am working…
YouTube is a lot cheaper
VCV rack. Free.
Or if ipad, MiRack. Cheap. (Sounds amazing)
Build a modular system. Patch and repatch. Generative ambient no youtube.
My first case finally arrived, so made a start moving over to it.
Everything there so far I built from DIY kits, though planning to buy a few built things eventually.
Fun system, though not very focused, but can’t complain as I’m fairly new to modular (and in no rush).
That is cool…DIY builds. I never have done that, I suck with building things…that’s why I’m an accountant!
I’m looking at Schlappi Three body. Sounds really really good. Can anybody comment on the playability for an improvised live set situation? Is it too twitchy and the range to large to keep it under control, or are the controls smooth enough to transition from sound to sound without getting into complete chaos immediately (with practise of course)?
It’s not very apparent from videos I’ve watched.
Oh man, it’s wonderfully playable. It’s got these nice big metal knobs with grooves for grip and a decent amount of resistance (no tiny potentiometers at all to deal with), so it feels really easy to dial in precise values.
I think the range feels plenty smooth, especially if you’re thoughtful about how you’re piling on modulation — you can get into noise territory pretty quick if you start cranking up modulation on top of modulation, but if you start simple and build with intention, there’s a ton of range to explore.
I should caveat, I’ve only had Three Body a few months but I fell in love with it really quick, it’s just a joy. And I play it by hand a lot more than I patch modulation to it (it’s great for either approach but hard to resist just tweaking knobs and seeing what happens).
dipping back into euro?
here’s my current ‘development rack’ ( * )
its been a lot of fun, so many possibilities in 84hp.
a lot to learn with them all still… and then the combination is a bit mind blowing.
( * ) these are modules, I’ve written or plan to write software for, so I have them in a rack that I can move around between my music setup and development area… and in this case, just to play on the sofa to explore a bit.
so, its kind of a weird/special combo…
when im not doing dev, they’ll be moved into my main rack or another 84hp which has a bit more ‘variety’ in it.
