Your modulars (Part 1)

Heyyy I’ve never had any power issues since being into modular but I’m doing a quick check on Modulargrid and this might be it!

Gonna try to remove a power hungry module or two and see if something changes

On the topic of power issues and cases, this seems like a good occasion to share a reminder —

To anyone considering getting into modular and deciding between the Intellijel 7u case vs. the Make Noise 7u case, just know that the Intellijel power supply gives you about 2x the juice that Make Noise offers.

I’m still very happy with my Make Noise case, but I do wish I was more aware of that fact before I dove in. I have to be a little more mindful about how many power-hungry modules I swap in at any given time, and on the rare occasions I’ve had strange module behavior, it’s hard to know if it’s the module or the power supply straining. Just 2 cents for new folks to ponder.

Editing to add — Omri Cohen has shown in his most recent videos that he was able to slide the 1u row on his Intellijel case down to the center of his system, a more convenient location that mimics the Make Noise CV bus (but of course with more possibilities since you can put whatever you want in the Intellijel 1u row).

Yeah some heavy hitters there with Modbase and LIP…
Avoid flying busboards if you can.

Unfortunately that didn’t fix it. I’m packing them back up and returning them.

Thanks so much @trackerjack these are such bad moments, always nice if there’s someone to think along. Cheers!

Absolutely. Intellijel’s power supply is excellent, pretty much over-spec’d. Puts the high price of the case in perspective.

However, there aren’t enough sockets (28).
Really a bummer if you want to use 1U much (and <=4HP modules…) I had to start daisy-chaining.

No worries! Too bad it didn’t work (or maybe not).
Shame to have to return it.

Yeah. I might try another Mex + Mux, first deal with getting these back within my return policy.

No, wasn’t me, just replying to the post above me asking if there were more videos of the Sofia - that one was posted to MW.

Not my recording, just responding to the post above me asking if anyone knew of more videos on the Sofia.

I have two Intellijel cases and no issues so far with power and I run some beefy modules.

I do wish Elektron would get into making eurorack modules, though it would probably cause me to go broke.

For me, the nearest equivalent, in terms of elegance and functionality, is Frap Tools. But the beauty of Eurorack is that there are so many excellent manufacturers to choose from, and so much scope to mix and match.

Yeah theres a bunch of modules that you can draw some parallels to, I would just love to see what they’d come up with.

I often use Befaco’s CV thing to convert CV to midi to modulate the digitone, but having direct CV control over parameters in an Elektron synth or drum machine/groovebox, would be pretty sweet.

I have Befaco’s CV Thing as well.

The Digitone Keys has two CV inputs that I’ve never used, and the A4mk2 has them also. I have an A4mk1 without CV inputs, but I have used the CV outs to good effect.

Needing some guidance…

I’ve fallen back into my I can’t make music cuz I’m troubleshooting issues mode again.
I swear I spend 90% of my time trying to fix stuff.

So I’m at my wits end. My case power fluctuates. I’ll be messing around when the power will just drop, sometimes flicker. It dropped enough for my ES-8 to lose connection with my computer, boning what I was just recording. I’ve tried so many interations of module placement.
The case I have has…
+12/ 4000, -12/ 3000, +5/ 2000
My draw is…
+12/ 1400, -12/ 490, +5/ 150

Definitely not short on power.

Does anyone have any insight?
My guess is crappy power supply? I’m tired of never getting to generate sounds, and constantly trying to repair stuff.

Edited: Wrong reading.

Could be power supply quality. What is it?

Is the only issue is the Es8?

At the edge…I’m less than 50% draw. Maybe less than 40%.

Edited for too quick a read.

Strange. I haven’t heard anything bad about PM case builds. The opposite actually…

Does the Es8 have drivers to be updated or anything?
