Yamaha SEQTRAK

Well looky here. We have a Yamaha product. Now anything they release has a lot of input. And for me this is pitched perfectly.
Polyrhythms are the standout feature. Ability to change length per track, But also the DX100 synth engine. Wow!!

You’re very polite. I would call it an OP-Z rip-off

Looking at the in depth vid.

Man this seems annoying to use. And for me, I’m good on annoying workflows.

To close to an MC101 in my opinion.

Looks rad but… hold fire boys, hold fire!

I wonder if it’s got that rubberized coating which I hate with all my heart.

The side buttons seem to. Because in the videos they seem dirty

Video started popping up

total 4 synth tracks (3 AWS or something and 1 DX)

It is much much bigger than OP-Z and thus the price is lower as it is easier to design and produce and more sturdy and reliable.

Yamaha should’ve give units to youtubers for reviews thus we’d know more without RTFM

Exactly my thoughts too, even down to using the app to modify sounds it’s very Circuit-y

a mini version (shorter) with say 8 tracks (sample, dx, synth, 5 drums) without a speaker would work to for me. that for 1-200 less would be great, so that it can fit in a pocket. This definitely needs a bag.
(and i know, op-z is smaller)

but if it has a strictly “send midi” mode for the controls and can rout audio through its effects, then it replaces
a) a travel audio interface
b) a portable midi controller for a daw
c) an arpegiator and sequencer for external gear
d) an external effects processor

thats probably 150-250€ already for many producers.
For me, i have some gear that i would be able to sell if it works as it does.

I was also thinking of one of the refaces, but then i would want one with a real grand piano sound and some FM synthesis. This could provide both, if it has 2-3 good piano sounds, …

This will never replace my more analog gear that i use for drone/noise, but my lpd8 (mini usb, bad pots…), kaoss pad mini 2 / korg nts-1, microkorg (the parameter editing is just such a pain that outside of preset use and midi out i don’t really use it)… this and a solid midi keyboard could replace those, depending on actual workflow and UX.

in regards to “rip off” of opz:
its as much an opz ripoff as it is op1.
Its less focused on recording and out there character as TE products are, it uses more well established sounds (probably they just raided their old sample and preset library from other products).
The visualizer…yeah, that one i totally get, and the “screen less”. but it already seems as if they are providing way more options and control to the user then TE. Its their take on the product category, people hoped for that since the OP-1 came out.

I had 1 opz in my hand once, and it felt…not sturdy.
I don’t have an IPhone. So a ton of the functionality is lost on me.
would it have had an android app as well, or be cheaper, or at least more sturdy… i would have bought one long ago.
This seems to be all of them for the price of portability.
For the same price of the opz + 1 module (now its 99$ i see) i have comparable functionality, but the screen feature actually is usable now for me on the go, (since not using an IPhone). Thats probably the biggest factor, that half of OPZ was unusable for me, or it was a 1200$ device.

Depending on how it works, it could be that it will replace the Push 2 as well, since my biggest gripe, that its to big and bulky, still stands, i don’t use all of its functionality, and my initial hope, to use Ableton but move away from my PC did not work out, and it doesn’t have an audio interface. (Yeah, as obvious, i have gas, but mostly to finally replace stuff around here and de clutter if it can do all i hope for)

Does this actually rely on the app or could you pretty much just use it standalone with a bit of practice?

all the promo sounds so damn clean, can it do dirty? the resampling seems cool

sharing this as hoping it can potentially have all the midi power and added innovation to make it a modern equivalent of the RS7000, real time midi sequence building etc.
but at present doesn’t seem so…

https://boats.yamaha-owners-manuals.com/ couldn;'t find the manual

You want a RS7000 without a screen? :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Edit: just kidding, I am learning the M8 headless with xbox controller right now

i want a midi sequencer that i can play into and it captures it instantly and plays back, kinds of MMT-8, RS7000 blend in 2024. the interface could handle most basic midi user requirements i think.
the app could handle minutiae editing if needed.

There ae some features available for editing only in the app but for the most part it can be used as standalone device.

From what i see many parameters can be changed with going through pages, but it seems as if not all are available.
Then again, if most can be accessed in a pinch, or changed by your phone via Bluetooth or laptop, i don’t see a problem.
it supporting Android, IOS and Windows makes it so that you usually always have a screen to connect and adjust by hand.

I wonder how many PCBs/daughterboards this thing has inside of it? All those controls… I feel like it might be a nightmare to disassemble and repair if you needed to

For £349 though I reckon they’ll sell a ton of these, if it reviews reasonably well and there’s no major launch hiccups. It seems like the sort of thing a lot of people are wanting atm.
