Yamaha SEQTRAK

Awesome
Keep us updated. :slightly_smiling_face:

Especially about audio routing while a phone and an external audio source are connected.

Something I don’t get is how off some comparisons are.
ā€œIt’s an elective without a screenā€ and about half the weight and size

ā€œIt’s nowhere close to a modern rs7000ā€ well it’s doesn’t need it’s own backpack and doesn’t weight 2kg.

ā€œThe digitakt/digitone can do so much moreā€, 1.2 kg, bigger in volume, needs 12v power

Why do some expect to do a whole production on a sketchpad? At no point would I want to do everything on such a device.
And a bigger tool would not be in my bag all the time since I would not have the space. Hech, even this one’s pushing it.

It varies, usually at least 2, often more.

Cool. I only know Moonlight Sonata and i can get away with 2 octaves if i drop the lowest register. If it can be done with an algo why not?

The other thing to bear in mind some gear has multi sampling too, but yeah I get your point, sometimes those artefacts can be used creatively, sometimes not.

My only sampler is the Isla S2400. In multisample mode i can get a couple of octaves but the samples shorten or lengthen so certain gear is more suitable to chromatic playback. Pianos aren’t due to their short envelopes, but synths with reverb say are.

A lot of sounds, even not sampled, have a narrow usable range imho.

2 octaves would be plenty for me.
Just tried it with koala, that works fine for even more, it doesn’t sound natural anymore, but that’s not what I’m after with a single sample. Time stretching to compensate for different length is cool but I don’t expect it (that would be a simpler in a box), but loop points would be needed, don’t know if it can provide them.

That brings me to… Are the rounds of the 2 synths multi sampled? Is that the reason we can’t just use our own? Different sample based on velocity?

Yes, AWM2 is pretty comprehensive and used in lots of Yamaha gear for some time now.

The format, yes, my question if those libraries are used here, or if it’s the ā€œcheaperā€ ones.

And I hope that this also holds for the drums. I just want a bunch of well sampled acoustic drums on there, for digital I can sample (or use) my model cycles / volca beats (outside of the still un modded snare I like it, especially because it’s so lofi)

I dunno, does it sound flat? Haven’t heard a punchy tune yet. Unlike OP-Z which is an excellent sounding device.

Opz has a more dynamic sound by itself, this has well balanced clean sounds… Meaning you probably need to add the punch and grit yourself (velocity, effects, Kompression for some aspects). I guess the demoes where all rather vanilla.

Well see. Currently sounds as if opz is the more immediate satisfactory instrument.

Mine arrived, feels a bit plasticy and light, very similar to a 80’s electronic toy, but no horrid rubber coating.

Had a quick 5 minute play, fx sound great, synths and samples seem clear and punchy. Off now to have a proper play will post more later.

THANK GOD! I prefer regular plastic all day long. I noticed in one of the Thomann pics, from the bottom, that the borders seemed … e bit black… like it was spray painted. But I Guess it’s better than that stupid rubber coat.

The app is next level, pretty much full remote control of the device, way better than the OP-Z app (which itself was pretty good).

If anyone has specific questions I’ll be happy to answer them if I can, though bear in mind I had it open for like 25 minutes so far.

can it get dirty?,

Yep!

Man, (so far) seems pretty well thought out in terms of a box you can set up with your samples, fx, performance stuff and what not, make a project in combination with the app and do a live set.

Some of the hardware controls seem a bit fiddly, like so far have not figured out if mute mode can be sticky, holding the side button and pressing an encoder(s) feels a bit clumsy. Fortunately you can do it very easy using the app, as well as stuff like mixing and sends.

One bit of a bummer thing, seems that the (say) kick you choose for a track is global for all 6 patterns in the track, was hoping they could be different. One bit of a nice surprise is that pattern switch via encoder is instant, so you can quickly jump around.

Edit: That paint on the strips is gonna wear off in no time, might put some plastic film over it.

First things first:
Audio in: routed through master effects?
Usb audio: if you play something on your phone, does it go to the headphone out of the seqtrak?

How are the side buttons, does it feel like pushing the thing around if you don’t fix it with the other hand?

Can it work as a midi controller while itself playing? (That one probably needs some time to figure out)

How do the buttons feel, I guess like a notebook keyboard?

isn’t the assumption that the 6 patterns are all part of the same ā€˜song’?
so that would make sense, but then again they also advertised Parameter Locking right? So I guess not on sample slots?

Not sure if you’ve tried those, but how does it compare to the Roland MCs?

Seemingly not for the preset, only for values like pitch

Yeah, please check what happens if you drag a sample on the synth track. That was the first thing I wanted to try.
There’s a screen where you can create a new project and it has some drop targets where you can drop stuff.
