WTF Locks?

I ran into something odd, and made a short video about it.

Basically when an Elektron box is receiving midi, you can hold trigs on that track to make different p-locks active while it’s playing. Is this a bug? Something weird with my setup? Common knowledge? It was a surprise to me, and I’m now planning to use (and abuse it ) as a performance tool.

this is great!

Sooo… You are basically saying that you found a performance mode for the digis… Great find!!

Can confirm that it works.

I found it myself a few weeks ago when sequencing a Digitone with a Torso T1.

It’s a bit of a trade-off, since you lose a lot of what makes these boxes special (parameter locks etc) by sequencing them externally, but it’s a nice option to have.

I’d noodled a bit with this since the A4 - it’s a bit fiddly to ‘lose’ a hand of course and to use external control … certainly fun performing potential; it’s certainly not a bug as you are basically manually reprogramming the trig page info with the external input, so it changes your ‘host’ pattern potentially … i hadn’t dug into it by sequencing, just manual playing via an auto channel keyboard

there’s a bit of recent chat here on this concept

much more handy on a device with its own ‘proper’ keyboard (AK DNK) imho but sequencing externally is a neat evolution on that

Works really well with analogs, too. More immediate/playable than the performance macros on A4.

This is PocketOperator Punch-in effects immediacy level.!

Pretty much.

Thanks for the responses, good to know that this is something we can all play with (and something that the veterans knew about).

Still exploring, and found that sound locks (preset locks on DT2) work as well so you can replace the whole sound /machine. I’d love to see a dedicated performance mode like this, as it’s easy to think of ideas to extend it with slew, toggles, etc. Should be easy to code (just kidding  )

Edit: Also to be specific, I’d love to see this for control all, esp with the new ability on the DT2 to configure which tracks are effected.

You’re a champ for finding and sharing this. Could be a lot of fun to play around with.

I wonder if this could be configured with midi channels and loopback so from a single midi track so you can control multiple instruments from one place

is this the same thing?

Certainly looks like it. I hadn’t realised till I watched this that this technique could be used to switch multiple tracks.

these WTF-locks are so interesting:

He says he “talked to elektron” and they said it’s a bug, but I wonder if that exchange ever actually happened. This is pretty specific and predictable for a bug.

after extensive testing I can confirm this “bug” (more of a Godsend than a bug for Digi owners) doesn´t work on the Models.

I remember seeing this video of a guy making fx scenes with the Syntakt, his channel is full of gold tips and tricks so I post it here and I think you can find other useful ideas that apply to this “bug”.

edit: I add the MIDI LOOPBACK DT FX Scenes (this is batshit-mind-opening-crazy stuff)

Is this bug present in DT2?
