Elektron can’t count to 3
OGDT firmware 1.5 was a very generous update, especially considering they were probably pretty well along with the DT2 at the time. I’m fine with nothing more than minor OG bug squashing from here on out.
wikipedia assumes MK is a designation indicating versions of a product.
machine drum mkII added additional steps to the sequencer, fwiw. that must have required some kind of change to the firmware to allow it.
nothing else fundamentally different (that I’m aware of) except for that they went from AC power to DC input which like the deck height being shortened is also surface level.
Most marketing is nothing more than psychological trickery. I wouldn’t read too much into this. They probably chose II over MKII in order to save a little printers ink.
The RC-505MKII is a major upgrade. The music industry simply glommed on to the military nomenclature for upgrades.
Yeah, I could see being a bit miffed if I had just bought a e25 digitakt a day before the DT2 launched for essentially the same price… not that they owe people but I dunno I does kind of sting if they really were selling OG DT for 900 dollars right up to the edge but not planning on bringing any continued support.
Granted I bought my DT at launch, I think it was 600, and it was a buggy mess and only after a decent amount of waiting did it become stable and then eventually it came into its own.
Elektron is pretty consistent in nomenclature, with mkiis being different hardware but still supported in firmware (though occasional different builds per platform.)
In this case it’s drastically different in design enough to be considered 2 over mkii.
i believe the real question is: Will elektron add the dt2 comb filter to the octatrack mk2
From a business perspective, they should not keep the dt1 Upgrade, that would effect the dt2’s sell.
But elektron has always been a great generous company, so many years, they never give up to undate mk1 mode, I thought if processor power is still available to more new function, dt1 will keep on
i could see an update of the dt1, that helps streamlining dt1 to dt2 project transfer if there are any bugs coming with that. and they might add a little present with that update
Exactly. Music hardware is not personal computer or a phone/tablet, which in time won’t be capable of doing stuff it used to be able to do because OS and ports won’t be compatible anymore with latest standards and CPU won’t be able to play latest youtube videos. Digitakt will always be able to do what it was designed to do, so it’s never obsolete.
I don’t agree with that. The reason to buy a DT2 isn’t those new software features like better trig conditions etc. It’s double the amount of audio tracks, stereo and a new hardware architecture.
There will be a moment, where Elektron cannot bringt software enhancements of the DT2 to the DT1, because DT1 isn’t powerful enough anymore, and maybe we are already there. So while we might see the new trig conditions on DT1, and maybe even the new Filter machines, but no additional LFO because there isn’t enough processing power. Nobody outside Elektron will know, but shipping new firmware updates to the DT1 won’t affect DT2 sales in my opinion.
You’re not willing to upgrade to a Digitakt II. Are you willing to pay for an update on Digitakt I?
Not that I think Elektron would go that route for the simple reason that it would be hard keeping it behind a payed wall.
And the reason to get a DTII now is to pay 500,- extra and help with beta testing.
The reason to get a DT2 now would be needing more audio tracks and / or the flexibility of assigning audio / midi tracks and…
The question is if there is still any significant amount of unsold E25 Remix Edition DT1 units in stock
Or loading a PS4 disc into a PS5. Backwards compatibility is genius in respect of the DT as it’s another safety net for DTOG users to take the leap and bring all the old stuff with them.
FYI - I believe the Digitakt was removed from the Elektron Catalog this week:
It is not under the ‘Legacy’ products yet though. Digitakt and E25 Digitakt are also no longer purchasable on the Elektron store.
I’d be really sad if workflow related features such as page loop weren’t to be ported over to the DT1. Now that even the Syntakt got it with FW 1.30, I think it should not be too hard to have it ported as part of a minor update to the DT1.
