Will Elektron update Digitakt 1 OS?

Now that Digitakt 2 is out do you think Elektron will continue to upgrade the Digitakt 1 OS with new features or is it now considered obsolete? I personally have no plans to ever buy a Digitakt 2 and I’m sure plenty others agree.

I don’t think it’s abandonware, but I have to question how much more they can squeeze out of the processor. I don’t expect any major updates but I wouldn’t be surprised to see small changes and fixes in the future at some point.

Still pretty damn pleased with the original dt, would like to have a play around with the new one at some point though.

No.
It it works, its not obsolete.

Once Elektron has sold as many DT2’s as they can to the first round of adopters, they’ll probably introduce a limited set of DT2 features to the ST, DN & possibly to the DT1, so that the sequencing operation of the black boxes are re-harmonised. But I wouldn’t imagine that this will happen for at least 12 months.

Ever say ever.

You ever know what updates will hit the DT2

Yes, and no. Not everything will be backportable from the new platform, of course.

That would be nice, but as Digitakt is their first unit to actually carry a proper II instead of “just” a MK II, I don’t expect them to backport anything to the older digis. I’m guessing they should probably be able to do things like Euclidean, if the less capable Rytm could still host it. But my feeling is that they’ll eventually move on and release 2.0 versions of the digis or an altogether new hardware instead.

I doubt Digitakt 1 will receive any new updates, it was a different scenario for machines like the A4 where the old machines got upgrades along with the new machines as they were using the same firmware, with Digitakt II is a whole different machine.

I believe that updating DT1 with some neat DT2 sequencer tricks can be a springboard towards Mk2 for those DT1 owners who are still wondering if they need Mk2.

Elektron has a good history of providing updates to other 1st generation products. Don’t know why Digitakt should be any different.

Because it’s not a Digitakt MK II but a Digitakt II. I think some things might be hard to impossible to port, some might be doable. But it seems to me that they just want to move on this time and get people to buy a DT II if they want the stuff that’s exclusive to it. Usually not a big fan of that approach, but if you consider what boatload of huge updates they’ve delivered during DT I’d lifespan, it’s okay. You get a lot from a DT I for around 400-500€. If you want more, spend more.

Can you explain the difference? Just different marketing ways to outline the generation of the product.

I mean you can google ‘Ford Explorer mk6’ and find that the ‘explorer 6’ is also officially called ‘explorer 6G’. Does it mean that it supports 6G internet? I doubt :robot:

I object against the term “obsolete” when devices are not the “new shiny model” anymore. Just because a device (or instrument) won’t get any future updates doesn’t mean it’s unusable or “outdated”. The marketing propaganda of companies and youtube influencers are brainwashing our minds a bit too much.

DTOG is perfectly fine as it is and certainly not “obsolete”!

Stradivarius is abandonware!

No more support from manufacturer Antonio Stradivari - what a shame!

the MKII machines are predominantly cosmetic upgrades but with the same components and operating system under the hood- ie the OT runs the same OS regardless of whether its a MK1 or MK2, ditto the A4, AR etc. DT2 is built upon a different architecture/has a completely different OS to DT1, so is essentially a different instrument to the DT1- hence 2, not mk2

unlike, say a TR-909 which is definitely WAY obsolete.

Thanks, now I don’t have to write this response myself :+1:.

Ok, thank you! That seems legit in the world of Elektron namings.

I’m not sure that it can be interpreted as ‘completely different OS’ because you can drag DT1 project into DT2 via overbridge. Still we, the end users, can only speculate on that topic until there is no (and I don’t believe that will ever be) open-source DT OS.

That’s more compatibility I guess - bit like opening an excel file on a Mac that was made on Windows!

I’ll probably get a DT2 but Ima wait 'till the 3 comes out.
