Who's Been More Influential: Aphex Twin or Boards of Canada

At least it’s a constant source of inspiration; gates are such an off- and on-again influence.

my serious answer is Aphex Twin.
mainly due to having a broader palette.

BoC are phenomenal, but almost a one trick herd of many beautiful ponies.

The existence of the above and the fact that people actualy like the noise they make, is what is wrong with this world. Total evil.

Triple B? Buble, Bieber, and Bryan?

If you dig into her 80s and early 90s catalogue, I’m sure Celine’s got at least a few bangers. She’s a good vocalist, just not surrounded by proper songwriters.

Was that woozy nostalgic lofi esque kind of sound really popular before BOC? I mean they got those sounds from their own influences, it’s in their name!

So many pedals exist now that help get that BOC sound, Gen loss and warbly.

There’s no one specific way to measure influence. Just spitballin here.

Notice that Aphex Twin and Boards of Canada are never in the same room at the same time. It’s obvious they are the same person. And never mind the fact that BoC is a duo, you all know that one of them is a hologram, and the other one Aphex in a mask.

first time I heard mhtrtc, and I was at that age a prolific music nerd, I’d never heard anything like it.

first listen had that very rare feeling of your brain trying to figure out what it was hearing.

be interested to know if there was similar-ish stuff directly before them though.

always regarded them as a perfect and inspiring example of appearing out of nowhere and creating something really new (even though their sound is nostalgic)

Definitely Aphex.

Listens, sales, product endorsement/branding.

I would assume that if someone knows about boards of Canada, they know about aphex.
But I wouldn’t say the inverse.

He’s got “Twin” in his name. Their name. Hiding in plain sight. I fall for it every time.

I always had the impression that BoC had a slightly wider demographic but less overall ears on it, like the same people into Radio Head Kid A but mostly alt rock stuff ended up finding BoC also but never really dug into IDM. Maybe just in my head but something about AFX does sometimes feel a bit more like “dude” music at times.

Just the other day as I was working at turning my voice into a wavetable and my girlfriend was curious about it, I explained you couldn’t really say much more than a few words and her response was you could say “orange”
