Good lead! Found the interview I was thinking of up there:
We have a brilliant old Rotel hi-fi that we run sounds through to get the feel we want, and we use various Drawmer compressors and filters to give sounds a specific time and place. Sometimes we get a bit carried away with the science of it, like even specifying what year we’re imitating by the type of filtering used on the drums or the synth parts. It’s a bit of a joke between us to aim at a specific sound, like the subtle difference between the graininess on a synth in a PBS jingle and a bit of incidental music from a British public information film from the same year.

This video popped up in my YouTube feed today. Really cool watch and that feed is a treasure trove of old documentaries that BoC fans might like. I love the 70s electric piano, flute soundtrack in this one, and some of the other ones I noticed had some cool synth-heavy stuff. Worth having a look and this particular cat one just makes you feel good.

Old ads/documentaries like made extensive use of the Mellotron. When I use mine I feel instant nostalgia. Kids tv shows as well.

They talked about realising their use of mushrooms wasn’t recreational anymore after a while. So they probably tested their limits before.
