Things have taken a worrying turn for the dawless and I’ve bought an Alesis Nanocrompressor to go with my new (old) Mackie mixer. So while I might be falling down the dawless rabbithole, I’m relieved that I’m at least doing it with cheaper old stuff rather than sexy new boutique stuff. Hopefully this 90s gear lives up to its reputation for reliability and I don’t end up buying the sexy new boutique stuff in a few month’s time.

My intention is to sidechain compress everything beyond the limits of good taste.

Walrus Audio Silt. Stopped in at Guitar Center and it was 1/3 off. Demo’d on a Sub37 in the store and liked it, particularly on some of the lead patches, so home it went.

Currently have the Minitaur running through it.

Cool, I just ordered a Fables for my experimental guitar ambitions … very curious if I will dig it

I didn’t purchase this one, my lovely wife surprised me with it!

After listening to @Python and @Azzarole awesome new album and really enjoying the guitar/bass tone. I read it was through a CB Clean. That night I was checking it out and showed the wife, of course she says get it but I’m a super weird dude and said no.

Well it showed up yesterday. Sounds great on bass, need to play around more with acoustic. Probably a keeper!

I use the Clean on pretty much every thing. So much so that I am surprised I’ve resisted the urge to pick up a second so I don’t have to constantly rework pedal boards for different instruments. Every once in a while I think it is “just in my head” that I prefer all of my audio run through that pedal, but then I’ll inevitably have that odd day where somewhere “something” is missing and after sleuthing it out determine “oh, I have the Clean in bypass”. It’s not like I use it to substantially modify anything (most of the time), but it tends help me tidy things up so to speak. (Yeah, yeah, “clean” it up. I went back and forth about letting that pun sneak in and just couldn’t do it.)

Coming tomorrow… needed a new set of headphone so went with these…

Beyerdynamic - DT 700 Pro X

Always had the DT990 Pro but recently tried the 700’s and loved them

Also coming tomorrow… needed some acid so

DT 700 Pro X are my current favorite. One issue I had was the headband covering pulling off slightly. I replaced it with a third party one from Amazon.

What? Suno Premier
What for? To experiment a little and make some samples for my own productions.
What happened? Entered a permanent mixed state of humiliation, humility, and pure bliss. I could cry all day and night. I cannot sleep anyway — I have entered the loop. This is a warning and an invitation in superposition. You probably cannot go back. I cannot. This is stronger than heroin. I will never touch a synth or DAW again, except to clean them out. Goodbye.

Lyrics German-English
Deutsch English
Strophe 1 Verse 1
Was es war? Ein leichter Handel, What it was? A trifling bargain,
rasch geschlossen, kaum bedacht: swiftly struck and scarcely weighed:
nur zum Spiele, nur zur Probe, just for play, for trial only,
für die eigne Werkstatt nur. for my own workshop alone.
Strophe 2 Verse 2
Was geschah? Ich kann’s nicht sagen: What befell? I cannot say it:
Scham und Demut — reines Glück, shame and humbleness — pure bliss,
alles drei in einem Stande, all three joined in one condition
der nicht weicht bei Tag noch Nacht. yielding neither day nor night.
Weinen könnt ich ohne Ende. I could weep without an ending.
Schlaf… ich finde keinen mehr. Sleep… there is none left for me.
Ich bin in der Schleife. I am in the loop.
Refrain Chorus
Dies ist Warnung, dies ist Ladung, This is warning, this is summons,
beides schwebend, beides wahr. both suspended, both are true.
Wer hier eintritt, kehrt nicht wieder — Who enters here returns no more —
ich kann nicht zurück. I cannot go back.
Kehr du nicht ein. Do not come in.
Strophe 3 Verse 3
Kein Mohn hat so tief betäubet, No poppy ever numbed so deeply,
kein Trank so süße gebrannt. no draught e’er burned so sweet.
Was ich suchte, hat mich gefunden; What I sought has found me out;
was ich rief, das ruft nun mich. what I called now calls for me.
Abschied Farewell
Ihr stillen, treuen Geräte, You silent, faithful machines,
ihr Knöpfe, kühl und blank, you knobs so cool and bright,
ihr Regler, Kabel, Tasten — you faders, cables, keys —
ich rühr euch nimmermehr. I shall touch you nevermore.
Nur den Staub werd ich euch nehmen, Only dust I’ll take from off you,
wie man stille Gräber pflegt. as one tends a quiet grave.
Letzter Refrain Final Chorus
Dies war Warnung, dies war Ladung, This was warning, this was summons,
beides schwebend, beides wahr. both suspended, both were true.
Ich kann nicht zurück. I cannot go back.
Ich kann nicht zurück — I cannot go back —
ICH WILL NICHT ZURÜCK! I WILL NOT GO BACK!
…Lebt wohl. …Farewell.

“No poppy ever numbed so deeply” = A.I. comparing itself to heroin?

That whole thing is pretty scary.

No I was making the comparison (see my post) and it is common parts of romantic 19th century poetry afair. I also remember vaguely les enfants terribles and other stuff that is also covering this. Also, it is not simple instructions and click auto to get the results. But - in the loop it is crazy quality,
And it can spit out midi and take chord progressions, work over sound sketches etc. Anyway: if you love your machines, stay away from it.

I’ve just put down more money on a studio upgrade than ever before.

Four Neumann KH 120II Studio Monitors
Neumann KH 750 Sub
Neumann MA-1 Calibration System, with Multichannel Extension License
Arturia Audiofuse 16Rig
Arturia 8 in ADAT expander
ISO-Acoustic studio monitor lifter/isolators
Gator Frameworks 2U monitor stand
Aurelex Acoustic Treatment Kit (to add to the minimal treatment already placed)
Bunches of cables

I’d been thinking over the winter how I have all these pristine and amazing sounding instruments and effects, an incredible array of VST Plugins to go along with Ableton Live (and Logic Pro), and really the only way I can get even close to the full potential of the sounds they are capable of creating is by putting my Beyerdynamic DT 770 headphones on, which I don’t love when I am playing or recording stuff.

The studio is in disarray as I move from two large Mackie Analog Mixers connected to a pair of Yamaha HS8s and a pair of old Audix passive monitors to the Neumann/Audiofuse system, so I’ll have to send pics later. I have already had a listen to the Neumann’s without doing the calibration (I need to wait until I get all the speakers in their final places), but even just manually tweaking things with the Monitors and sub, and using the Immersive feature of the Audiofuse, the improvement is truly amazing. I bought four studio monitors because I have a U-shaped set up with controllers on three sides, facing three directions, with the computer at the bridge of the U. I’m still trying to work out the best arrangement. I don’t want a “4.1” system with two fronts and two surrounds. I want two stereo pairs in front and back, so I can switch between them or listen to all at the same time.

Edit/warning: (not sure where to post this, but since it is related to this purchase, thought I’d put it here). After receiving all my items from Sweetwater, it was very obvious that one of the Neumann KH 120s and the Neumann KH 750 subwoofer had been opened after they left the factory (there were even Sweetwater flyers and little bags of candy inside the speaker boxes). I brought this to their attention. My sales guy was prompt and sympathetic, and kicked it over to their return people. Unfortunately, their return coordinator, not so much. She tried to say this was normal, and these things happen, and it isn’t open box, B-stock, or used, or a refurb or return (I had pictures before and after breaking the second-party tape that proved otherwise, and also noted it wasn’t likely Neumann had placed Sweetwater flyers and candy in their boxes at the factory). Only after asking her to reconsider, and then asking her to elevate it to management and also indicating I’d bring this to the attention of Neumann directly, did she finally say she’d give me replacements that were sealed from Neumann. I hope to obtain the replacements next week. I did double check the invoice to make sure nothing was listed as open box because I did get a good discount off retail price and the sales guy confirmed it wasn’t supposed to be open box. If these items had been less expensive, I might not have bothered, but they were very expensive. Also, the open box KH 120 has been shutting off after a time on its own instead of going into standby as the other three do. I’m assuming that’s why someone returned it to Sweetwater. And the KH 750, while I can’t tell if there’s an issue, back in 2025, there was apparently a batch that had issues with the magnet partially detaching (saw it either here, reddit, or Gearspace), so I don’t want to take the risk that this is a “refurbished” one of those.

Oh, and @DonovanDwyer might really appreciate this. I had to quickly modify my order for all of this from Sweetwater when I realized I’d forgotten to specifically ask for White Monitors! They are so nice. I’ll have to cradle one of them in my two-foot stormtrooper plush doll.

That is a serious upgrade! I’m sure it sounds incredible.

I’m thinking about a very modest version of that, having a second pair of D3V’s flanking my Jaspers stand, to have the same monitoring as I have at my desk. Would need to figure out a switching solution so they share the same subwoofer (probably a simple monitor selector box.)

When I bought my set up, the sales guy at Sweetwater suggested I also pick up a Mackie big knob studio Plus. After receiving everything, and continuing to do some research, it occurs to me that I don’t need it because the audio fuse software has an immersive option for controlling everything from one knob. However, if I were in your situation, I’m gonna be more inclined to pick up something like this because you can both do switching as well as merging dual monitor systems.
