Got a mega-bargain (seriously) on this second-hand AR MK1. Second time Iāve owned one and I regretted selling the first one. This was very cheap and advertised as having no sound from main or headphones output (which was true) but I figured Iād take a gamble and I could use via Overbridge. I used some contact cleaner stuff on the master volume knob and also opened her up and removed/reattached the 2 ribbon cables I found within (I have no idea about electronics) and the main output and headphones now work fine. The MIDI IN port is not working but otherwise it seems in full working order now. Overbridge also works fine.
Iām very pleased and I remember every bit why I loved it in the first place. Just chuck a load of one-shot drum/synth/whatever samples and sample pack loops on and itās a brilliant groovebox even without the synth engines (which are patchy, lets be honest).
The analogue filters and overdrive etc make magic from even the most dull samples. Yay!
Hereās a storefront some of you might find interesting (e.g. @Scot_Solida). I didnāt buy anything, just drove by and thought of some of the posts in this thread. Never been in the store. It always seems to be closed when I drive byāmaybe itās appointment only. Anyway, could be a treasure trove of really old stuff.
I am sure I could not resist a place like that!
I love these little mixers, I sum volca and other inconvenient split signals with little guys like this as well, have about 6 of them. May as well carry one in my pocket for every time I need it around the house. think I hammered in a loose fence post with it once.
I love your spirit!
My latest purchase is the Sleepy Circuits Hypno. Itās a fantastic little unit and you can control it with the Digitakt (kind of).
With no sequence running, a Digi midi track LFO will modulate graphics (and stop when the depth is set to zero). When the Digi sequencer is started, the lights on the Hypno blink but theyāre a little off from the triggers and the graphics are off too.
Even with this problem, the Hypno produces stunning visuals! You can quickly set up Hypno LFO video modulations while laying down beats on the Digi (theyāll be a little off but you can make it work). When a visual looks good, move to the Hypno and save it as a preset. Thereās 3 preset slots and you can fill them with great visuals in 10 minutes of jamming. Then hop back and forth between Hypno presets, crush them and reload or load anotherā¦
copypasta
I like to jazz funk jam and 3 visual presets will keep me going for a while. Once a preset loads, I take control of the Hypnoās knobs, buttons and sliders and modulate the screen like I want. Play the Hypno like the synth / instrument it is, but on visuals. Then go back to the Digi and send another CC to take control from there while working on beats or pattern swapping.
I canāt express how stunningly good the graphics coming out of this unit are.
If anyone has suggestions for my beat sync problem please let me know.
edit: I have a minute long video showing exactly what I described (with the audio) but Iām old and canāt figure out how to load it on the interwebs.
Latest purchase for me is an iPad Pro 12in
I bought it to replace my 6th gen iPad so I could give that one to my daughterā¦didnāt really need the pro but over the last couple of years Iāve discovered a lot of genuinely impressive music production apps for iOS.
Iāve got a ton of synths, drum synths, samplers/drum machines and effects, I just added some Fabfilter stuff too since ProQ and Timlees and others are such staples in my normal sessions in Ableton.
Iāve got it all loaded up now and am running everything in Drambo (which by itself is very impressive and capable) on top of that I was able to fit my entire personal sample library on it as well so it appears to be turning out to be quite a powerful little portable music production environment, thatās helpful me squash my Ableton push 3 GAS for the moment (since I only really wanted on for the portable/standalone functionality) I think with a loaded iPad Pro actually seems to have more potential than a stand alone push 3 since thereās such a plethora of instruments.
In addition to that itās inspired me to take up drawing again, I used to draw all the time and Iām not half bad at it but just havenāt in years, with Procreate and a knock off Apple Pencil itās a lot of fun, also started messing around with animation too.
As a bonus Iāve also been using it for video games, I found a web-based emulator that works for most of the classic consoles so I threw all my ROMs in the pad as well and I have an 8bitdo controller, excellent for NES, SNES, Gb/c, GBA and Genius plus Iāve got the iOS versions of Final fantasy VII, VII and IX, Castlevania SOTN, Chrono trogger and Doom. Also I can use the PlayStation app to stream my PS5.
At first I bought it thinking that Iād just use it to mess around with music stuff and internet browsing but itās actually turned out to be quite a handy/fun things to have. I havenāt gotten it set up to work in my studio yet (like an adapter for midi) but so far Iām throughly enjoying using it by itself.
Welcome to the Moukey family.
Amazing!!!
Absolute classic. I love a lot of the stuff Mark and Tom did together, across all styles.
What iPad did you get M1 or M2? Also
What did you use it for so far?
Ordered an Oxi One!
Iāve had a Torso T-1 for the last four five months. And whilst I really liked how it generated rhythms, I never found my way around it for anything melodic. I went from hoping Iād figure it out to frustration and just losing interest over the last weeks. Iāll miss the way it does non-melodic stuff though.
Time to go and try the Oxi One!
I currently live between two cities because of my new job. Weekdays Iām sleeping in an appartement away from home, so this will sequence my setup there
This was my experience with it as well. Hopefully the Oxi does what you need!
It can be done⦠melodies are my primary use for it these days. But itās definitely a āpro-modeā thing. You have to really understand what itās doing under the covers to make melodies work. And I donāt feel like they do a good job explaining any of it. It probably took me a year before it clicked.
Iāll share it if it does
What direction did you went after the T-1?
Yeah I kept knowing that it can be done and might be cool when it clicks, and Iām fine with putting in some work with gear to get to know it, but here I really just lost any motivation to push through, it just became a chore on a to do list. Glad for you though!
I tried the NDLR briefly, the second time I had owned one. Still didnāt use it much. I think I have discovered that I just donāt like tools that make the music for me or that try to generate ideas/ shortcut some things - I want far more control than any of them offer, and itās easier for me to finish a song if Iāve come up with the idea from beginning to end.
