How did you find a brand new mk1? It definitely looks brand new.
I have the mk2 and much prefer the look of the old one – it’s probably silly to have an opinion on the look, when it does the exact same thing, but there’s something inspiring about how instruments look… There must be something psychological about the aesthetic experience. I’m gonna ask a brain scientist I know about this: “hey brain scientist, why do I prefer the Octatrack mk1?”
It was pure luck (i.e. being quick on the draw via a saved search on Reverb). The seller bought it new years ago, hardly used it but only now decided to sell.
And on the design - I also prefer it design to the Mk2 - I think it has a bit more personality with the coloured, round buttons. Each to their own though.
I love them so far! I actually got them to replace some 6XXs (and my other lower end headphones). It’s like when I first bought some nice studio monitors after using cheap ones for so long, or maybe even more extreme of a difference than that, I am really surprised by how much better they sound. They also came with the nicest headphone carrying case I have ever seen!
What would you say are the biggest differences between the MM-500 and the LCD-X soundwise?
I have been wanting a Beebo for a long while. A HUGE thanks to @DonovanDwyer for putting this little doodad into my hands. My intentions? Make all the weird things sound… weirder.
I thing the MM just have more midrange detail and the bass isn’t as huge, but maybe more accurate though? I think there would be situations where I’d rather listen to certain music on the Xs, but maybe not for mixing it.
I usually will do a bass check with Angel (Massive Atrack) and So What (Miles) and I found the MM were still really holding their own, the tonal balance maybe just doesn’t tilt as dark maybe?
