Was close to the RM1x a few times, but never bought it.
My first piece of gear was a Yamaha DB50XG daughterboard (which attached to a Soundblaster 16 soundcard). Interestly, the DB50XG’s sound engine later found it’s way in the CS1x (which LaudusDeWire posted above). My first proper keyboard was a Korg Wavestation EX.
Barring the really early stuff like my Fisher Price turntable and portable mono cassette deck, I started with one of these:
And eventually two of these:
And one of these:
But I think my first dedicated electronic music tool was this:? Hard to remember…
Whoa, what is that Gibson?
Korg Electribe es1 mki
The first I bought for myself was a Yamaha P-115 digital piano.
I started way back in kindergarten with the family piano, then electric guitar in 9th grade (Ibanez strat knockoff).
But my synth journey started with the Korg Minilogue in 2016. I got it very soon after it came out. That was my main squeeze for years until I got a Model:Cycles in 2021 then sold the Minilogue for a Digitone. I added a RYTM last year. And other than needing a new MIDI controller keyboard, I feel pretty set for now!
You’re not wrong! LOL
I do have a wishlist of things I’d like to have but I’m perfectly satisfied with how things are right now.
Cubase 4.0!
Man so much happened since then.
Casio Rapman
Loved the Voice Effector and feedback when held the microphone to the speaker.
He shows it around min. 25
First instrument was an electric guitar
First DAW was FL Studio (borrowed from a friend if you know what I mean)
First DAW controller was a Launchpad Pro (because of Madeon)
First electronic instrument was an OP-1
First instrument: Rented Selmer saxophone (first alto, then moved to tenor), circa 1989.
First electric instrument: MiM Fender Squire Jazz bass. It was my bar mitzvah present. I’d been begging for one for years. I still own it and it sounds amazing. I’ve since added some decals and replaced the knobs and pick guard, but not the strings.
First electronic instrument: Probably somebody’s hand-me-down Casio when I was little, but in my adulthood, the Volca Sample.
It’s a Gibson Corvus (or potentially the equally odd Futura that was released around the same time and was very similar, can’t remember for sure). I rented it from a guitar shop with a small Peavey practice amp as a kid as my first guitar and I loved it because I was just young enough and it was just weird enough that I thought it was cool. My guitar purchases since then have followed that same thought process. They’re expensive today, wish I never sold mine, I’d keep it for sure!
Damn the nostalgia bombs are dropping.

A Behringer Crave. Sold it again agter 9 months.
Learned about trackers on the c64 when I was 11. First hardware was a Yamaha qy70, I worked the whole summer vacation to buy it when I was 16.
Good ole King 2B was the 1st, but moved into bass trombone. Thing still made me 1000 fold over in pay than what an elektron instrument or a DAW did.
MC-505 in 2000
I started with guitar. My first guitar was an inexpensive nylon string classical guitar, made by a Spanish manufacturer called Admira.
But even before that guitar, I had a really strange little box and I don’t know how I acquired it. Perhaps it was a gift, because I have no recollection of getting it. I think technically my first piece is gear was a Philips PMC 100 Composer:
I made some weird ass sound effects tapes that I found years later. I couldn’t remember the name of it until I saw it featured on Bad Gear a while back. This was truly some bad gear!!
