There’s a guy called MIDERA who makes amazing music on an mc303 on YouTube - literally mind blowing good stuff given the terrible reputation of the device
Microbrute in 2014. It was a slippery slope as the eurorack boom was just starting to gain momentum and it had the small cv matrix.
Things escalated very quickly to say the least.
It was a great synth to experiment with in an affordable and compact package.
Pics please….
LOL yes I’m sure it can be done.
Unfortunately my computer at the time died and the pictures of my setups went with it.
In one year time I had accumulated a 21-u pile of 84hp Doepfer cases full of modules and around then I started to loathe myself for spending all that time and money into modules and I wasn’t making all that much music lol.
It was a good lesson though.
At times I still think I’ve got too much gear but it’s nothing compared to that fortunately, plus there is barely any overlapping so it’s semi-justifiable.
#1 - Yamaha MT8X… 8-track recorder that still own it and it needs some cleaning but, “one of these days” I’ll set up the looping rig that I had in mind when I bought…
#2 - Yamaha TX16W
Roland XP-60, and I still have it, and have recently rebuilt my hardware studio/DAW-less around it.
I tend to play linearly and freeform in my natural state, so I’ve always found step and pattern sequencers quite constricting, except for at the end of a project’s development mode where I’m trimming midi down and rearranging things.
Works perfectly for that.
Technically my first piece of kit was a recorder, then an alto sax, then a hand me down acoustic that’s neck was slowly separating from the body. First piece I was stoked for as a teen was an early 90’s Les Paul Jr and a Peavey Bandit. RIP to my mom’s nerves once I got my first delay pedal.
It all started with a fruity loops demo I got on CD from some pc gaming magazine probably.
Then used the cracked version for who knows how long and eventually got license from a friend.
When it comes to hardware, first saved some money and got a MPD24 around 2007-08, but didn’t really click - my soundcard had high latency. After working my ass off the whole summer in 2008 I got a secondhand MPC500 and it was magical to be part of the mpc sampling from vinyls hip-hop heads.
I still have it, but haven’t really used it too much in years. Basically I was just making music in FL studio for a couple of years, until like two years ago when I watched Ricky Tinez making music with a PO-33 I decided to give it a shot and had a blast. From there it was easy to get NTS-1, Microfreak, M:S and exploring different genres and ideas.
First HW gear was a Behringer Crave analog subtractive synth. Was fun to get started with but fairly quickly got annoyed by its limitations, in my view. It was interesting to patch the different modules together, to that I could make the filter corner frequency be adjusted by the pitch of the tone played. Also using the filter or the LFO as an extra oscillator was fun, but in the long run I was annoyed that I had to use these modules for something else than what they were intended to do, like filtering. So after 9 months I sold it again to the same guy that I bought it from and at the same price. Nice way to get started.
When I was a teen, my Dad came home with a Casio CS-1. I had learned how to play Keyboard, thanks to the Farfisa organ and my organ teacher, Miss Montana. As far as I know, he didnt do this for any of my other brothers and sisters. They played sports. He indulged my weird artistic side, and would periodically come home with cool musical toys, or art tools for me. This one stands out particularly, because iit led to me buying a Korg synth. I’m glad you posted this. It made me think about how cool my Dad was .
Early early would be a C64 and Microrhythm, but actually creating music would be:
Amiga 500 and Octamed
Amiga 500 with Turbosound as a delay line
HH six channel mixer
Later I got a Yamaha CBX-K1 XG which was amazing for me at the time.
Some of the tracks I did still hold up today, mostly the ‘intelligent’ jungle stuff.
Did try to get back in to trackers with an M8 but my brain seems to have wired itself another way. I do want to pick up a cheap Thinkpad or something like that with numpad and set up a Renoise machine to try again with a more standard human interface.
Mine was the OP-Z, it was when I was returning back to music after a 15 year complete break. In the old days I just used a crappy PC and Reason.
Mine was Yamaha DjX back in the 90’s
lovely memories.
The Yamaha RM1x… followed by the ‘mighty’
Boss SP-505
I went for an A4 mk1. Even the shop I got it from didn’t think it was wise first move.
Cue months of utter confusion including the classic,it’s broken during very stages.
In the 90’s I bought a Yamaha SU10, Quasimidi 309 & Electrix warp factory, however I cant remember which I bought first, it was quite possibly the SU10.
Still got the SU10 & 309, sold the warp factory back in the day simply because I didn’t know how to use vocoders, I had no idea about carriers etc, I was expecting to just plug a mic in and get the classic sound which just isn’t the case.
Digitakt
Followed shortly (in order) by: Syntakt, SP404mk2, and Digitone.
Few days ago got a Microfreak to “complete” my studio.
Famous last words!
My first electronic gear was a Yamaha CS1x.
But the only one I regret selling a little is the DX200… and well the PLG-150AN was quite nice as well
