Well, 8 and 11 brought me back to the distant auditory pleasures distributed by Steve Stoll at the dawn of time.
Has anyone here heard of Freiwillige Selbstkontrolle?
They are fascinating.
During the Eighties, they basically did stuff like this:
(Wonky covers of 50’s and 60’s schmaltz)
(Yeah, a few early “Volksmusik” elements here … this won’t be the last time.)
In the Nineties, their music morphed into a more terse and less frilly version of itself:
(What if a marching band wanted to play a Velvet Underground/Nico cover of Neu!'s “Hallogallo”)
(Weird Bavarian Polka/Waltz mash-up about incest and trains)
And then, in the mid-Noughties - “Yeah, let’s cosplay as a jazz band doing a stint at a posh hotel in the Swiss Alps in 1973, and let’s ask Anthony Shakir along so it all sounds vaguely Detroit-ish.”
(F…cking brilliant album, by the way.)
(Even better, in my opinion. A more refined version of all of their earlier stuff.)
I love this band.
So happy about Love Rollout and Katharsis – waiting on it since the Dekmantel Podcast!
Beautiful tracks! (His Dekmantel podcast wasn’t even on my radar yet!)
Will see all of these live in June at the Sideways Festival in Helsinki, Finland - pretty excited! Also Fever Ray, M83, Desire… ![]()
