Don’t listen to straight up metal much anymore but really appreciate bands that evolved and mutated from it into new forms. When I saw HEALTH with Daughters recently this was the heaviest shit ever. The studio version doesn’t really capture the power of it.
Their recent stuff is much better recorded, and hugely inspiring to me.
It’s been a couple of years since I really paid attention to what’s happening there but I do have friends who still follow the scene closely. However, the only band I’ve been repeatedly recommended in the past five years or so is Obliteration from Norway who I’m slowly starting to appreciate. No real innovations here either though.
Some really good bands that I discovered between maybe 2003 and 2015 were Portal (probably my favourite), Teitanblood, Repugnant, Degial and Venenum.
Then there’s this fairly new band from Finland called Ghastly, which I’m kinda involved in (have written all their lyrics so far). Still think it’s quality stuff.
Yeah, two of my best friends play in Ghastly. I was kinda thinking we know some of the same people. And yeah, I think they’ve gotten better with every album.
Actually I just started listening to Black Death Horizon by Obliteration. Don’t remember why it’s been a bit meh to me earlier. Starts really well at least.
I still use Mezzanine as a kind of yardstick in terms of how incredibly mixed it is. The huge low end never swamps or drowns out the more delicate elements. It’s genius.
Great album. And still one of my top live experiences after almost 20 years. I met Adrian Belew the day after the concert while wearing self made Crimson t-shirt, so he greeted me first. We had a little chat and he signed me The Power to Believe CD. Met rest of the band one hour later as well but they were not so responsive…
