Unfiltered Audio - Battalion (soft drum synth)

I hadn’t seen the question, I don’t think you can define this kind of Step condition, but given that you can have very long independent sequences per track allows you to have a single step defined very far in the global sequence, or to define a step at the end of X measure. Don’t forget that automation sequencers can be independent too! Etc etc etc

Oooohhh yes @Choopy i did forget (didnt think of it!). Honestly thats a good enough solution if im actually making a song. Thank you.

Battalion is sooooooo good. So fun to use. Randomization mastery. %randomization of randomization is fantastic for doing incremental pitch changes to make simple melodies.

once this is sorted (and +1 for midi output!) its a no brainer instant buy

I have more or less decided to keep using microtonic and the other software solutions i already have; i really like the UI and some other parts, but its most likely not for me. Don´t really know what´s bugging me about this plug really - i guess i have to give it another go before deciding.

There is something about the sound that annoys me; can´t really say what?!

I’d considered and still wonder about adding “modifiers” or different behaviors to individual steps by right clicking. It’s actually added in the code to an extent already. Idea was you could right click on a probability step and have it get a little icon to indicate that it’d act in a different way (like 25% prob being 1/4 instead of 25% each pass, remainder getting probability, etc. ). I haven’t yet thought about what kind of modifiers would be on each type of row. Could be fun.

send me all of the thoughts/opinions/desires for MIDI out, everyone. Under the hood, the randomization is always seeded so fully repeatable to practically infinity, meaning we can compute and export almost any length. Been trying to figure out the most elegant kind of workflow but would be interested in user concepts.

Needs optimization badly. I know of many areas I think we can squeeze a ton of CPU back but that’s off the record until I test to confirm.

I really want to double Battalion with my Vermona Drm1 MK3, the only thing I need for that is velocity and user-definable note per track

This is a magical plugin btw, thank you for making it!

Cool, meaning we add live midi out from Battalion? Right, that’s no problem. Just need to add some options to make everyone* happy. Will get that out asap. I want to add OSC out just for the heck of it as well. Cheers!

Yes! I should have clarified, live midi out. It’s such a fun sequencer to perform with, it would be a shame to only have the option to print midi.

Yesss welcome @amusesmile Glad you and @trickyflemming are with us. Amazing. This plug is da best! Im sure there are bigger fish to fry but I will ask the following:

could it be realistic to add elektons probability list of “1st, underlined 1st, 1:2, 2:2” etc up to 8:8? I am only one man and my uses are usually not in line with the typical elektronaut - I am a singer/songwriter type. I like to have a little bit of control over the infrequent timings because of their nature to not trigger for long periods and then double up when using randomization. I also love to be able to control what sounds trigger during the first loop through the sequence.

But there are workarounds for my wishlist so don’t mind me:).

That’s good to hear !

any chance of a sample slicer lane?

You did a great job with this one, it’s a lot of fun and soooo many options to design sounds, a hardware version would be the next step in my book

Not sure about a lane but… well I’d really like to first add a kind of simplistic slicing mode to the sampler (after the normal 4 engines), but I’ve been contemplating something like a full sample browser XO style, or maybe slicer like a dedicated tab where you can drop something and slice it up quickly to assign to the 8 voices. TBD, infinite possibilities and I also don’t want to throw anything into this that seems just stapled together. I think there’s a bunch of options that will feel right and fit perfectly, stuff that would make it feel more complete rather than less so. But anyway, a simple slicer mode at minimum. One of the things Mike really wanted to add was a resample method between the voices… haven’t yet figured out how it could work in a simple way that isn’t a UX horror show. Hardly related but I still want to make a plugin somewhere with positive but also negative feedback, like you can turn feedback/resampling up, morph a sample to something unrecognizable, but then turn it negative and eventually get back to the original. Reverse entropy kind of idea.

@amusesmile hey, what do you think about moving the randomisation amount somewhere where it’s always visible? I loved the randomiser when playing with the demo, but didn’t like having to go into the settings to change the amount all the time as I felt like I wanted to do this quite often

slicing exporting to the slots like that would be freeeeeesh!!!.. Ok definitely staying tuned!

@amusesmile, do you think exporting audio each voice is possible in a future update?

would be great to be able to use the sequencer to trigger other stuff with midi (live midi out - either on diff channels per ‘voice’ , or Diff midi note per voice - ideally assignable to choose either ! )

exporting defined length midi clip (to allow for polyrhythm stuff to develop etc) - it would be nice to be able to set which voice gets exported (some sort of voices solo / mute option in the export menu?)

re patterns - would be great to be able to trigger patterns via incoming midi note. would settle for using program changes if midi notes (use a specific midi channel for this? ) is not possible.
also +1 from me for the option to switch pattern midway thru but arrive at the same step in the next pattern (like elektron “direct jump”) …

sounds good . also +1 from me for 1:4 , 2:3 , 4:4 etc conditional steps…

and I said this before but it still would be a great addition if possible

“… something that I would really like is a record button for manually entering events into the sequencer - I know thats prob old skool but imo always nice to have that option”

pref with option to quantize input or not - or with a quantize strength dial to keep stuff loose but not too wonky
