In live I create 8 MIDI tracks and route them all to another track with Batallion on it, so I can trigger separate patterns for each part.
Yeah so i did understand right.
Edit, i figure it out
For anybody else wondering, you have to set up both the midi input and midi output routing on the channels passing through midi from an external device. The passthrough channel need to listen to the correct midi port and channel, and then send to Battalion on the desired channel. Something like:
Beat me to it - thank you!
Channel 1 allows you to control all parts, and then channels 2-9 control each part individually (no matter which note you play, so notes on Channel 2 will also play the first instrument etc.)
Yep! After you set up that whole thing, select all of those tracks and create a Group Track, then save that Group as a track preset. It will save you a lot of time in future projects.
One additional DAW template trick, as I just received an email asking about this:
When you go to save your DAW multi-out template, you can right click on the channel assignments to Lock them. When any parameters are locked, they will remain unchanged when changing presets. With this, you can save a locked multi-out DAW template, and all presets will remain multi-out.
@trickyflemming is it possible to control the ’Dice Roll’ button on the performance page via MIDI? If not, that’d be a fantastic addition…
Yep! Channel 11 is set for doing so:
I prefer using note 12 to randomize the performance so that I can use note 13 to reset back to normal, plus the performance depth helps keep everything from going nuts.
Thanks! Managed to miss the fact that they’re notes!
having loads of fun with battalion
Quick progress update:
- We now have the ability to export the User Presets folder as a .zip from iOS. As a test, I exported it to iCloud successfully, deleted all of the user presets, then re-imported the same .zip file. With that, my iOS user presets library was back to where it was.
- The iOS file stuff was driving me partially insane, so I created 3 new Battalion sampler engines to boost morale and to give non-iOS users a sign of life.
- “Garbage-Fi” is a sample engine with sample interpolation turned off for extra crispiness. On top of that, the four parameters interfere with the accuracy of the phasor used to lookup the sample data. It’s pretty nasty.
- There are two slice-based sampler engines that I might delay for the update after. One uses my phasor randomizer VCV code to jump around from slice to slice, randomly reverse or stutter slices, etc. The other is a slice-warper that can rhythmically warp the pitch and timbre of each slice, or work as an Akai-style time stretcher at certain settings. They are already a ton of fun to play with, but I’d like to add in variable windowing for click-suppression, and then add snapping to the start/end positions for accurate slice lookup.
The SWING parameter in this gif was a placeholder. It will be replaced with WINDOW or something similarly-named for de-clicking.
Just… wow.
I hate to be this guy but are patterns still coming in the desktop version? I love to jam with Battalion but putting together a full track with sequencer variations is impossible unless you print to audio which is not ideal in my opinion. I know I can sequence it from the piano roll but then I miss out on the cool tricks Battalion has in its sequencer. I’d move on to Sugar Bytes Drum Computer but it sounds crap compared to Battalion!
Yes, the 30-minute in-and-out iOS adventure has turned into quite the time suck. The two big feature requests (patterns and MIDI out) will be the focus after.
Great to hear
love to see continued development on this thing. Easily my favourite drum machine VST i own. I’ve made so many dope kits, i’ll polish them up and share them here soon
Agree!
Looking forward to hear some cool kits
You need beta testers obviously !
For sure! The iOS release will be a public beta for a bit like the previous iOS releases. There are so many Apple trapdoors and foot guns to worry about, plus we’ll need a better idea of what the slowest viable iPad will be.
