Torso Electronics S-4 (sculpting sampler)

Would be just as cost effective to buy a small euro rack case and one of the many granular modules on offer IMO

Having just bought a looper/granular module, I must gently disagree. Not for four independent tracks plus other FX. Eurorack is rarely a cost-effective solution to anything. A used iPad plus knobby controller, yes.

Agreed, I’m thinking more about the outcome produced as I have found that many granular options end up giving similar results in terms of usable sounds.

For me the S-4 sounds overpriced at the moment but I would love to be wrong. Maybe they just need to up their marketing game!

There is a range of granular sound, but there’s also a sort of clustering around tinkles or wash that we tend to hear, and I don’t have enough experience with enough options to know how far any of them can deviate from that. I agree that what we’ve heard so far is not only samey by itself but in that more general cluster. We’re just going to have to wait to find out what it really can do.

Per the latest video, it’s also an audio interface, can route tracks to and from the host computer, and can (not at the same time) also have its io expanded with a class compliant interface. 4gb of memory for samples, which can be accessed directly over USB. Not stated, but I’d assume it’s also able to act as a midi interface.

at the 30 sec mark on the video: is the USB-c crooked?

No matter, not trying to say anything with this comment, just noticed it then couldnt figure out if it’s crooked or I’m crooked…

Analog sync. Aka gates for eurorack

It is, at least I noticed it immediately. That’s not a production unit though, so nothing to worry about I imagine.

The fact that it can be an audio interface definitely adds some value here.

Ive got the oxi one plugged into Bitwig on my work imac, away from the main studio so I can learn them both in between jumping through pointless hoops for advertising creatives. I think this would fit v nicely with them. Especially since it has a mic…

I’m in.

I am really hoping it will be possible to power the device through USB-C, but most probably it won’t.

I was hoping this for portability when I’m traveling in my van but I’m sure there will be a myvolts cable so it can be powered with a battery pack.

These 1 min teasers are probably the most annoying promo/marketing move I’ve ever seen from a synth company or any company really.

100%.

Still looks like they are unsure in their firmware and what they want to ship. This might have been an impulse purchase for me if they had dropped a proper demo at announcement. At this point I’m gonna wait until unaffiliated demos and reviews pop up.

But maybe it is working for them, otherwise they would’ve stopped?

I like the way he’s looking to the left at 30sec to check his mail or whatsoever on his laptop.
