Torso Electronics S-4 (sculpting sampler)

Companies always shamelessly copy the design language of other companies.

Apple/MUJI have copied most of their design language, which everyone considers to be timelessly beautiful, from Dieter Rams.

He is the “father of german industrial design” who is famous for creating his timeless design language for the products of the once german company Braun.

Many articles have been written about it (just two random examples for research):

German Designer Dieter Rams wants Silicon Valley to stop copying his design
Apple made a fortune by “copying” him, and MUJI has his shadow everywhere

That doesn’t mean those companies copy business models just because they share “ripping” design langueages

Honestly from the looks of the specs sheet this looks very very cool. On the same page with others on this thread and wondering about the workflow of the device. The sheer amount of modulation options has me very interested and if it can process live audio then we are on the big gravy train. It seems like it will cater to a more experimental kind of sampling and production which I’m all game for. Interested to see the reveals and product demos.

Based on the only product Torso has released, I don’t see the similarities at all with Teenage Engineering. I’d be more inclined to compare them to Sony at this point.

Yeah it’s modern but it doesn’t need a professional designer to tell that the product photography, categorisation, full width grid structire, even the colour structure is very similar.

BUT

like you’ve said that doesn’t mean they’re ripping off. To be honest, TE is a design company happens to be designing music tools along side other stuff. Torso is solely a music company. TE spend their years to prove their design philosophy and skills.

As a digital product designer, I can tell that it’s not torso is the one who’s copying but their lazy web designer who copied TE’s shop page. It’s very normal for Torso not to realise this. And it’ll be very unfair to call TE as a copy cat just because of that. It’s like calling TE a wanna be Yamaha because they have FM synth in OP-1.

Also the extra gap in between the accessories and merch is killing me. Which kinda shows the poor web design implementation

Let’s not bash other people’s work and keep assumptions to a minimum about what Torso does or doesn’t do.

Also most web design I see always looks like something I’ve seen before. Too many designers I guess.

Damn, we really need some details on this thing so we can stop discussing websites haha

I’m most interested in how the S-4 will integrate with T-1.
At this point, I personally don’t really need an fx box or a looper.
I’d prefer a more specialized sampler rather than a toolbox.
Had my eye on a pair of Temperas to pair with the T-1 , but it’s very quiet on that front.

As absurd as that desk price tag is (it is), the market aim is not musicians. AFAIK they have designed a modular furniture system for their own use in warehouse / office, spaces that change often to adapt to different needs so modular furniture was the obvious choice. They are testing waters to see if they can also offer the solution to other companies or places that could benefit from modular furniture. Also Ikea price shouldn’t be the standard, we are too used to purchase products made from cheap labor, often exploitation. I’m sure TE pays a fair wage to their engineers in SE.

I think it’s silly to get mad at a product offering that is clearly not for you (not pointing at you).

I don’t have any TE device, neither a fan or whatever, but the thing I respect is that they make what they want, not what the potential customer wants. Choir is a production line of a concept art installation. Just think on any concept product a brand has showcased, to only stay like that, a concept. I see TE as manufacturer of concept products, sometimes silly, sometimes brilliant depending on your own experiences and expectations. It’s easy to be demanding to manufacturers instead of letting them do whatever they want, if it’s not for you, move on.

Example, Roland concept piano. How cool would it be to have the option to acquire it?

I do really wish this thing had 4 pots on it for track volume control, or could be assigned to other things. Then it would feel more useful to me as a standalone thing.

S-4 has 8 pots and dedicated Mix and Perform buttons, I assume volume would be included in some way for these modes?

Yeah I guess in mix mode those might be set to volume/pan for the tracks, which wouldn’t be too bad though I’d still always prefer to have a few more dedicated controls so I can instantly level mix other tracks while tweaking one of the sounds.

The device I’m looking for is something that can capture clips quantised and facilitate arrangements on a timeline and mixdown, ideally with some interactive live effects. Interested to see if this fits the bill. Push3 is close but huge. Blackbox is close but obtuse. Op1f might weirdly work but costoso.

I just bought a T1 so I"m hoping for some cool synergy between the two products, but a nice new sampler that is easy to use but can stream long samples is always good.

hot damn, pls TE just release it already, the tension in this forum is STICKY

Found this…preorders are open. I jumped on it immediately.
