Torso Electronics S-4 (sculpting sampler)

They did not. Roli did.

Thank you clarifying, was a little tough to follow the replies.
Roli I’m not surprised made a bad decision. They’ve made so many, that how many times did they need to be bailed out?

Someone plz leak the price

I think optical isolation and the shape of the connector (DIN/TRS) are unrelated.

Correct. You can see on the MIDI electrical wiring spec that the optical isolation happens inside the the receiving device in its MIDI input. This is no different for TRS midi

They just can’t stop making bad choices.

It is in the spec, but that doesn’t mean companies follow the spec. Test it yourself with a multimeter. All the din midi connectors I tested on my gear are isolated, while only one trs midi (from an old korg electribe from like a decade ago) is isolated.

I guess I should have said it correlates with cut corners (like no optical isolation).

Assimil8or is one of the few things that make me want go back to euroracking. But, damn, it’s a lot of dollars.

I mosttly try to stay away from eurorack just because the most innovative stuff happens there - and it would just drown my wallet :poop: since I can barely resist. I have a behringer system 100 clone tho :see_no_evil:

I still use and love an e-mu morpheus (not a sampler but an insane machine nevertheless), those z-plane filters are bonkers. I love old samplers, highly recommend at least having one to actually see what was possible.

All the rossum eurorack stuff actually is genious, especially the sampler=assimil8or.

I try not to buy an old emu sampler even tho those machines are very deep machines,
better than any actual sampler when its about synthesis.

I am hyped. It’s been almost a year I am a user of the T-1 with on an Elektron setup (Digitone+Analog Rythm) and it has almost completely replaced the Elektron sequencer for me (I use DN and AR as sound modules, and the AR sequencer is been used for timestretching purpose only).

I love how they think about UX., so I am really confindent this thing will be very playable. And by reading the specs it’s impossible to avoid a comparison with Octatrack.

Something that may have gone overlooked, judging by the threads comments: the possibility to connect a Class-compliant USB audio interface should make possible to have more than 2 stereo inputs. I am curious if I’ll be able to connect my Soundcraft 12 MTK Signature directly into it.

It’s true OT has 8 stereo tracks. But here each stereo track already has got granular, filter, colours and reverbs/delay. Which, if you want to do that on OT, takes at least 2 tracks using Neighbours machines.

Also, don’t overlook the modulation capabilities, Torso Electronics went full on crazy with Touring Machines on the T-1 and I see there will be plenty more here and that you can modulate the modulators. This is a setup for a crazy experience, more akin to what you can do in the modular world with modules like Clouds/Beads/Morphagene.

Last thing, there is a button called ā€œSceneā€ and a button called ā€œPerformā€ it reminds me of Analog Rythm. They say you’ll have instantaneous and dynamic control. The button called ā€œTempā€ exists on the T-1 and it’s a temporary state to change everything you want, then, when relesead, works like a reload of the previous state. It’s a very nice performance tool and I prefer it to the Elektron reload function.

All in all, if it does what it says here, with a workflow comparable to the T-1, I’ll throw 800-1k without esitation.

Interesting, so you dont miss having a screen on the T-1?

I love the elektron sequencers, i just cant imagine how to build livesets when my sequencer is not in the box of the elektron gear, like how do you save the patterns you like on the t-1 together with the patterns on the elektron?

I don’t think comparing it to OT is needed. This device is it’s own thing and Octatrack has so many use cases that comparing Octatrack to Octatrack based on workflows is even hard.

I’m totally with you! I also pointed that out earlier that this is an overseen feature that seems very powerful regarding the machines specs and anticipated usecases you described.

I’m trying to keep my expectations in check and wait and see how it’s implemented.

I’m cautious with exitement when it comes to class compliant usb audio interface implementation because of the teething troubles regarding that topic with my MPC Live ll and Maschine+. Took me quite a while to find compatible interfaces that actually do what Akai/NI promised. Still a gambe after every fw update tho.

I’m pretty sure the option of class compliance just expands the ins and outs when you use the s-4 as an audio interface. I think they will fokus on the 4 stereo audio tracks = hence ā€œs-4ā€. But I am just assuming here.

Allover I agree on most points, t|so showed with the t-1 that they actually are really good when it comes to implementing musically inspiring ui and thus an innovative ux.

It really comes down to delivering on the promises the specs let one anticipate :wink:

I am also willing to throw money their way, especially when the synergy with the t-1 (which I expect) is given to a point where sequencing and modulation of 4 stereo tracks will be a heck of a lot fun with all the mentioned influences the machine seems to have (e.g. space echo/microcosm/op-1/424/clouds/beads/morphagene/etc.)

4 parallel stereo audio tracks, 4 modulators per device, 20 per track = :crazy_face:

More than enough party for my brain.

I think you are right, probably I should specify that it fits perfectly concerning what was my use case of the Octatrack! BUT:
-If you were using OT for playing stems, this could fit (albeit only 4 tracks instead of 8 probably);
-If you were using OT as a sampler/sample playback machine, this could fit too (this looks more than capable to outmatch OT);
-If you were using the OT as a performance mixer, this could fit aswell (looks like it, at least on paper, you can add an external interface if you want even more than 8 input);
-If you were using the OT as an Fx box/sample mangler, this totally does it (and a pretty crazy one, with an almost unlimited amount of modulations);

So yeah, seems like it could cover a lot of ground that the OT does with new algos and fx.

Still, no fader though. But scenes and performance, with Torso ability to make playable instruments, keeps my hopes high that this will be a hands on device.

but this does not have a proper sequencer, right? so it can loop or you pair it with their sequencer, which is probably what they want?

That is uncertain as of now… we now that hit has Euclidean or algorithmic modulation, so that is some form of sequencing. but we donĀ“t know if that modulation pertains to trig and note data as well.

I’ll never be able to afford this, but it’s good to see a LCD screen on a professional Instruments instead of a OLED.

Can’t wait to hear how it sounds.

Let’s just wait and see how it turns out irl rather than specs. On paper lots of things can overlap, but it depends on how it’s all implemented in the machine.

Really excited for this device, can’t wait for the the first demos and reviews to drop. On paper it looks very promising!

I love the discussion here, and share the enthusiasm and hopes for the product that t|so will launch on Nov. 16th.
But, when I see the words ā€œspecsā€, and ā€œon paperā€, I can’t help feel a bit of cognitive dissonance, since whatever was visible for a brief moment has been literally withdrawn.
I look forward to discuss it next week though :slight_smile:
