Tonverk: User Thread

Hey TV users, anybody have opinions if its better to multisample using the TV built-in tools, or using a DAW?

(I use Logic and don’t own a TV but would like to use it primarily as a multi-sample instrument player).

Hey! I just bought the Tonverk and I notice that the audio output is much lower than the rest of my Elektron machines. I’ve turned up the volume, I’ve checked the mixer section and I don’t see anything strange… any ideas?

There’s tons of headroom to allow for the masses of gain the fx can add, so this is by design. If you need more gain before adding FX, take a look at FX page 3.

@Bartizanier: i’ve sampled a ton of hardware and software with the onboard multisampler and thought it worked pretty well. There’s people who prefer using a DAW to build multis so they can make the recorded notes shorter and use loop points. Personally, I prefer doing it without a PC and just record longer notes (I put in a 512 GB SD card so that I don’t have to care about saving space).

@AtumRex: I’ve never used the main out of TV but the headphone out is by far the loudest output I’ve ever used on any hardware. 30% is already as loud as around 80% on my digis. You could just route the main output to the headphone out.

Using Logic’s autosampler and Convert with Moss to convert to Tonverk is much better IMHO. It gives you more options like round robin & velocity mapping, plus doesn’t mess up the occasional sample (which Tonverk seems to do).

Thanks for your responses!!!

The real problem with the long notes approach (besides the fact that drones can and should be very very long and that’s impractical without loop points) is not SD card memory, it’s project ram. Multiple layers with long samples are hundreds of MB and that means a few big multisample instruments and some long stems eats up most of your project memory.

Sounds reasonable, hasn’t been an issue for me so far though. I’m almost always running four sub tracks with 48 samples on each of the eight aub tracks (so 8x48x4) plus 3-4multisamples instruments with average note lengths of around 8-12 seconds plus longish release times. My projects take long to load but I haven’t run into RAM issues once. I’m not saying you’re wrong but giving some context.

Has anyone cracked the problem of backing up just a single project and the related samples rather than having to backup the entire card? Is there a way to consolidate everything into a single folder?

Tbh I don’t know if this is already possible with TonVault, but it’s worth to ask this in the corresponding thread:

Having used TV for some time now i have to say the speed you can do useful sketches of tracks at is crazy good. It is not perfect here and there but the balance between ease of use and creative features is fantastic.

Totally agree. Is incredible to make sketches. A little more difficult to finish songs. My goal is finish entire songs with it, mixed and prepared for live and for release.

That’s a pretty accurate description! It’s easier to make a very interesting loop (or several of them) than on digis, but a bit harder to turn them into a song imo.

It needs kits (or parts) big time. And starting step in song mode.

Newbie Q: how do i open for example all Wavefinder presets without FUNC+SRC?

Hello TV folks !
I wasn’t really interested at launch but I start envisioning the tv as a probable candidate to unify my setup.

If I understand correctly by sacrificing/using 2 of the eight audio tracks I could use and process two external sources in the tv . A iPad using usb and a synth using the analog input for example ?
Does it mean I could also process some internal tracks sending them to the iPad and return back on the iPad track ?

What about latency is such configuration ?

Thanks.

difference presets / Instruments is easy,
Instruments contain only samples/wavetables plus mapping
Presets contain the above plus rest (FX, lfos, arp etc) on top

Problem is if i go FILE->LOAD->PRESET
then those presets are for all kind of machines,
not just the one i’m on (Like for example WAVEFINDER) and they also can’t he sorted by machine.

i want to open the presets for the machine i’m on only but this seems not to be possible. You also cannot filter by machine.

For inputs, only 2 mono channels (or 1 stereo).
Possible to assign inputs to 2 busses (eq and amp env available).

No filter nor Amp on tracks 1-8, only fx. Theoretically you can assign an USB source hard panned (mono) and an audio input source (opposite hard pan).

I’d have to double check concerning USB routing to iOS and latency, may have changed with OS 1.41…some folks may answer before…

Ehh without multi sample loop points on devices it’s a pain and forces you to go to the daw to do your multisampling at which point I just prefer to midi sequence the hardware. Tonverk is very close the but the multisampling workflow is not quite there unless you are just using multisampledinstruments from other people who’ve done the hard work of setting the loop points

Not sure if I’ve missed this in the manual or whether it’s really how it is, but copying/pasting sub-tracks (to another sub-tracks track) seems innconsistent:

  • With record enabled, FUNC + COPY copies the sequence data of only the active sub-track
  • With record enabled, TRK + COPY copies the sound data of all sub-tracks, not just the active one
    Am I wrong on this?
