RIP Tonverk… is this the end? (that would be pretty funny after all this rampant speculation)
I agree, DNII seems great. And I might even have bought it already, if it weren’t for the tonverk leak, so the leak lost them at least 1 potential DNII customer, which is me. If you look at this thread for example, there are many opinions voiced about wanting an Elektron Box that includes both synthesis and sampling, so I’d guess I’m not the only one putting my hopes in the tonverk being that kind of thing.
no, just wait 6 months (maybe less). DNII has nothing to do with this.
My theory: They created Tonverk as the jack of all trades but then realized, Dang, that would make all the other boxes obsolete.
So instead, only employees at Elektron can use it internally and have the time of their lives.
No I think the format just changes.
This is an even broader view of musical instrument making.
With the current line of products, I’m not sure who needs another more expensive box.
16-tracks DT2, 16-tracks DN2 and updated Syntakt, there is already enough synthesis for many setups. Even two boxes are now covering A LOT
Perhaps the category of user changes.
The groovebox concept is not new (1996)
But the demand is there because the combo of sampling associated with synthesis, in an Elektron box, is a good match!!
Interestingly, you can see in the Tonverk leaked photo of the back of the machine that there is a MAC address on the label, along with the serial number. You don’t see that on any other Elektron devices, because that number is an unique identifier assigned to a network interface controller, meaning the device can connect to a wifi network (like your cellphone). So will this let you download a machine that you can buy from Elektron, and swap as you want ?
It’s telling that it has the little rectangle trig keys, rather than the square ones elsewhere. Those ones seem unique to Digitone, for some reason. The teal colourway is also noted. However a Chord mode is also prominent, which is lacking in DN II. The ‘notes’ button however is new, and we see it on DN II.
The only thing you can really guess about Tonverk is that it has deeper routing, something many users would appreciate.
It’s hard to say whether or not Tonverk became the DNII, however I think there does linger a new routing and transfer concept here, that if it didn’t make its way to the Digitone variant, perhaps will be introduced in some other way.
I do like what some other are suggesting around a more agnostic box where you can buy and load machines, but, eh, I’d be happy if it just came loaded with all of them
Step 1: Assemble random non-working “prototype” with left over parts from real designs
Step 2: Leak decoy prototype photos onto internet forums
Step 3: Let user base work themselves into a froth, and then release a few more staged photos to bring them to a boil.
Step 4: Release the solid but non-revolutionary item you were planning to sell all along
Step 5: Profit!
Don’t get me wrong, Tonverk is interesting, but I’m still waiting for the Omnitrack (octatrack + AR + A4 +DT 2 + DN 2 + ST + AH+FX + 16 track hardware mixer in a box that weighs 30kg). Can’t wait to hit ctrl-all on that bad boy
You have my money there
I wasn’t really clear, but the last sentence in this post explains better what I mean
this thing looks great as a standalone groove box, but my Digitone is part of a bigger system and I rather have the immediacy of controlling the most sophisticated part of the synth
Just to add a footnote to my earlier post.
If Elektron introduces an all-in-one box where you can buy the machines you want to go on said box - awesome.
If Elektron introduces an all-in-one box where you have to pay for a subscription, to have access to all Machines, and can switch them out whenever you want to, but still always have a monthly bill - I’m out yo. It’s been fun!
TLDR - No subscription model for me, thanks.
Sidenote - this is a pretty good think-piece on subscriptions and “how they’re ruining our lives”. Some pretty funny bits in here too. Well done piece.
Elektron have pulled a few surprises recently. Like the E25 models came out just before the MK2. So it wouldnt surprise me if something similar happens with a Tonverk all in one groovebox usurping the digitone II annd Digitakt II. It wouldnt surprise me at all.
While I’m all for a box that can just host different machines I can buy, I agree that I wouldn’t want to subscribe to a service for that.
Tonverk trademark was updated on October 23rd, has this gone under the radar ?
