And a Windows download tool – i’ve been waiting for that. So i’ve got all the older updates too, to try, like velocity curves, strum, and the GUI changes.

Thanks for the update zfigz. I am excited to try all this.

Irijule has returned to Kickstarter with the Theoryboard. Not really sure why, perhaps they feel buoyed by the success of their first round there and think advertising there will boost sales.

If you bought in the first round you should not feel left out, it’s basically the same deal, with some small mechanical changes. There is also the option for a RED Special Edition version — I like my BLACK one to be honest. The other change is the price is a little higher, they have 50 units at $500, and then it goes to $600 — these are still good prices though imo. The delivery is set for December — and since this is a redo, i’d say the likelihood they meet this schedule is very good.

ADDED: The 50 at $500 sold out very quickly. Looks like Irijule will be quite successful with this KS launch, they’re already well above their (low-ball) target.

yah, i saw this and scratched my head a bit. since you were able to order from their site, i don’t see the reason for this other than what you mentioned about wanting to market it.

anyhoo, i’ll probably never back another kickstarter because so much can happen between now and when the item arrives in your hands (rarely is the due date ever met).

i’m awaiting the pipes kickstarter, call that a wrap for kickstarters for me.

The Kickstarter is going bonkers for this, they’re already at 50% of the entire amount of the last go round, just few days in of a long open order period.

There is also a long (somewhat uninformed) discussion about the T.B. on Sonic State # 627 starting at 38:11 in.

ADDED TWO DAYS LATER: Only a few days in, they have 54 days left, and they already have more backers now than in all of the first go round, and they have raised a lot more money too, due to the higher pricing structure. !! Not sure where this goes from here ? This is really good for original backers as some of this cash has got to be spread into further firmware development.

Anyone have any new features they’d love to see in the firmware ?

ADDED ANOTHER TWO DAYS LATER : They’ve already raised twice as much as they did on the first go round, and they still have 52 days left. They will really need to get some help with assembly, that was a sticking point the first time around.

ADDED AUGUST 21ST: They’ve topped $900 thousand and still have 20 days left — they’ll go over a million no doubt, one hundred times their goal. How much more than a million will they raise ?

ADDED: One week left. They’ve raised $ 940,808 so far. Do they reach a million with the rush at the end ? We’ll see soon.

I don’t own it, but I had a look at it and one thing I think is completely missing is inversions per chord… currently adjusting the inversion adjusts all the available chords…

There is only about three days left to get in on this. They have really sold like crazy, almost one million dollars pledged so far. Plus they’ve now added a large list of new software features — so as i hoped this will be good for those who bought on the first round too.

New Features

  • Performance mode (allows user to save chords in a designated area to recall for certain songs/performances)
  • Change color palettes
  • Bass mode (doubles notes so they can be played with rapid fire in tandem)
  • Arpeggiator (we already have a beta version of this)
  • Step sequencer (sequence chords AND/OR single notes)
  • Allow program changes via MIDI CC, NRPN, or single pads designated to individual MIDI channels
  • Change voicing, spread, or octave of singular chords instead of the whole set (and save them this way)
  • Different strum types besides up and down
  • Pitch/mod support on pads or touch screen
  • Juxtapose chords on both sides (same scale or not)… same with single notes (mix and match anything)
  • Support MIDI in via USB
  • Alternative spread function. Spread “root note” or “spread entire chord” (this gives big open voicings)
  • Turn off octave folding
  • Live note update automatically updates via MIDI IN when chords are played in the DAW
  • Latch key in menu. Press pad… latched… press again… unlatched
  • Drum kit mode
  • Live note update on own its own MIDI channel
  • Note Repeat Mode (similar to MPC)

Not sure from this description exactly what all these are but am looking forward to getting more detail. Adding a sequencer, and arpeggiator, allowing the sending of program changes, latching, and other stuff sounds great.

Yeah and it looks like they’re going to add your idea too, Dan. (Seventh item in.)

Irijule will need to both hire some help for the assembly and shipping, and also for the software development now too.

Last call on the Kickstarter.

I’m going to stick to learning the piano the old fashioned way for now,
but being able to have different inversions per chord is a big improvement
for better voicing of chords

Me too — i find the TB an excellent tool for doing that !
I have half a dozen or so ways using the TB that really moves my piano practice / ear training forward, I talked some of this up thread.

Using the TB has not interfered in any way with my traditional keyboard playing. It had been suggested by others up thread, quite a while back, that the TB is some kind of crutch. That’s plain wrong.

As for the new features being added, i think i decoded some of the descriptions at least a little. They’re being very ambitious with their goals. I’ll have to wait to see how this all works with the user interface, it looks like it might entail lots of menus.

Just to pull one thing out of the long list:

Juxtapose chords on both sides (same scale or not)… same with single notes (mix and match anything)

I think this means having the two halves of the keyboard work in either “chord” or “melody” mode at the same time. I had considered this myself. In particular having two “melody” keyboards same scale/key or not, going to two different synths would be interesting. Two “chord” keyboards to two synths— hmmm I’d have to think about this some. Keep in mind they’re both poly aftertouch as well. A 96 button poly aftertouch controller.

I wonder if the sequencer will use the key grid somehow ?

I think the TB is a real product now, and will be sticking around and not just disappearIng.

I really just want an easy way to change midi channels…like a button combo.

All in all, I’m really happy with it though.

It’s a heck of a lot easier to wait for this with the product actually in hand, and no money on the line. This is all gravy.

If they do use the grid in a sequencer somehow, having 24 slots across will be a little out of the ordinary.

Maybe for waltzes, or doing 6 time. Triplets or swing right there on the grid. I’m joking but I do wonder.

ADDED: They just crossed a million dollars pledged. There is just 16 hours left.

Did any of these features come to fruition? Where is info on the product? Just bought a used one, waiting for it to ship.

Congratulations Dstepatl on your purchase.

Development of the second generation hardware is still underway, but is close to a conclusion. Here’s the two Theoryboard pages:

I don’t know for certain, but i’m guessing that at least some of the new software development will follow along later. Irijule raised a TON of money this time, so they have the resources to do a top-notch job with the new software. The original was well done at core, but the new features will really put a polish to it all.

What attracted you to the Theoryboard ?

The similarities to Launchpad Pro mk3’s chord mode. It’s like that on steroids. Then polyphonic after touch. I already have a Push 2, but it sorely lacks chord functionality. I can’t play keys well, so this will be great.

Will V2 hardware’s firmware updates be compatible with v1 hardware? I’ve gone through the site, and wish there was a manual as well.

Do you own one? If so would love your impressions up till now.

I’m extremely excited.

Yes, the hw update has a lot to do with manufacture, so the two versions should be functionally identical.

They will need one coming up with the improved software. To now they could get along without a “manual”, but now they’ll need one.

I am a user. I use it as an idea generator, and to help me improve my present conventional keyboard playing, and it works well for that for me. I need to explore more of the sorts of uses you will be using it for. I’d love to work it more into generative music sorts of uses. I’m excited with the new software too, so it’s good the improvements will be available for the first rounders too.

Excellent. It was an impulse buy, I had been thinking of it for a long time, but forgot about it. I also thought it was $1100 USD. It popped in my head today, and i saw there was a wait for preorders… almost ordered, but decided to look around and found a mint one for a price I was good with. I’m going to be using it for hiphop/trap. Lots of chord use with basic arpegiations and melodic lines.

One nice thing is… chords on left hand sending midi into a synth in Ableton… bass on right sending to another midi channel in Ableton with Sublab for 808’s. Stuff like that. I love the idea of playing two instruments at once.

How do you like the feel of the pads for playing/recording? This will be almost a primary midi controller for me. Not completely replacing the keyboard, but I’m hoping capable of it.

Edit: just saw your lengthy review, I didn’t know I could expand the bullet points. Great information in there. It sounds like I made a good purchase with an item that should continue to improve.

Diggin it so far… wish the melody side was a tad bit more responsive, but I haven’t tried adjusting the settings. It’s a keeper.

This thing is pretty great. One thing I’d love, and apparently it’s in the plans, is that i wish it could register playback of chords from a midi track and adjust the live mode to match.

Finally got mine a couple days ago, and got it plugged in tonight. It seems fun, but it also seems to be sending out random program change/midi cc data when you e.g. use the buttons up top to change key. Not sure what’s up with that, but it’s going to be really annoying if this thing needs custom midi filtering rules to play nicely with others.

Also, mine showed up with a partially busted display — going to have to write in about that, but given that the box was fine, this feels like a pretty big QC failure.
