The Mixer Void

You weren’t kidding, holy hell. I was not prepared for that price even knowing it’d be expensive from the description. It’s very cool. Something I’d love if I were a professional musician.

If i understand it correctly it can have insert fx after the 500 Module, if you insert a looper pedal, its a tactile octatrack? This thing is fucking crazy with the routing possiblitys, and 500 inserts a clear dream unit.

Checking price - yeah dream on Sternenlicht. But damm this is a great unit.

Just saw that A&H have released a rack version of their fantastic SQ series digital mixers - a cheaper and smaller way to get that feature set and quality:

Fucking finally! They’ve been saying for years that they’d never do it.

Nice! But for $3K and 4U of space, it would be even more appealing if they had managed to fit a few more inputs into this. 16 inputs in 4U feels kinda stingy.

16 mono + 3 stereo inputs (and 48 channels max with a stage box)

I get that A&H wants to sell their stage boxes, but I still feel I/O is limited relative to those of competitors.

Yeah just ordered a Behringer Wing Rack for the studio with 24 inputs on the back arriving today. For ~1k€ can’t go wrong. Replacing a 16rig + 18i20 + patch panel + standard delay/reverb/compressor pedals. Saving 2k€ just here. And can route anything anywhere basically with a few clicks. Also allows expansion with stage boxes.

Funnily enough the original PCB was designed with this in mind. Weird that it took them so long.

That’s precisely the unit I’d be considering if I was in the market to replace my Presonus AVB based setup! Would love to hear your experiences with the Wing Rack once you’ve got it setup and you’ve had a chance to work with it.

I mean, it does make sense to overdesign for later flexibility once you’ve got one implementation stable and whatever R&D is amortized.

Yeah I hear ya. Also having only xlr inputs makes it a less appealing vs say the QU-PAC for us synth heads. The expansion cards are super expensive too.

Wish they’d make a cheap 16x16 ADAT i/o card for the SQ.

Wing Rack is more interesting for synths with 24 TRS/XLR combo inputs. And an additional 16 input stage box is around 250€.

Yeah the Wing rack is so much bang for buck. I’ve not used it, but I’ve used the X32 series and the smaller rack versions - so many cool features for the price. The ethics of buying new Behringer gear is at play though in my mind and others no doubt. Even so it should certainly be a consideration for a high channel count digital mixerface. (always lol at that portmanteau!!)

Does Behringer ethics come into play with mixers? It’s not like they’re copying anything and they actually bought Midas almost 10 years ago.

Yeah true! Many of their products are great and I own some that I couldn’t do without. I’d love to try the Wing out (surface version probably) sometime for sure, shame though I can’t foresee a situation anytime soon where I’d have a chance or reason etc. I’m always a bit paranoid about rack mixers and wireless control surfaces relying on a network too. That’s a point I’ve just thought - can you control over a USB cable too? Don’t seem to recall ever seeing that as an option on these modern surface-less mixers. I suppose the WiFi network can be solid but the thought of it still gives me the fear!

I’ve tried so many mixers and various “mixerless” setups, but always come back to this same basic conundrum.

I don’t trust the sound of Mackie VLZ mixers to run everything through, but as a submixer for vintage synths and fx I think they’re good enough. So ordered a 802VLZ4 to run five synths into, send/return to one multi-fx box, and (most importantly) use the “alt 3/4” functionality to either run sources into my A4 or AR inputs, which then go straight into my interface.

Choosing the 802 versus bigger Mackies makes me have to stick to a more streamlined setup… when I have a bunch of open channels I always feel that I need to fill them :space_invader:

Edit: it’s the price of a car.
