The improvised techno thread

A Sunday Techno session, my usual line up: Digitakt / TR8s / Swarm / LXR-02 and DFAM + DFAM Thing of course.

I’d never heard of the DFAM Thing - cool!

Yeah I can recommend it if anyone is thinking about getting one. It gives the DFAM sequencer a much needed upgrade for sure, similar to the Sonoclast MAFD I imagine. There is a euro rack version in the making too I believe. I Just wish Moog had done something integrated from the off.

Added loopy pro with midi controller to my set up…adds more sounds to the palette and it helps to have some prepared loops , balances nicely with the improvised stuff…new camera angle too, hopefully you can see what’s going on a bit more.

Sounding good  I just started using LP too - what a great thing it is to use with hardware. Are you resembling the live stuff or using prepared loops?

Not resampling or live looping in this video, I have played around doing it and its really so simple. Using a combo of my DFAM & swarm loops and chord loops…I suspect my LP set up will evolve, I’m loving mapping to the notation launchpad XL for FX on the loops.

Cool, man. I used to have the XL but sold it ages ago - kicking myself now as it’s perfect! Also sold the Faderfox MX12 a few weeks ago, which would have been great, but was an arse to program……for me anyway
I’ve settled on the Akai midi mix as wanted three pots per channel for DJ style eq, and the Akai APC20 as pad trigger for now (appreciate duplication with faders), but just noticing the APC20 is very old and the pads are a bit hit and miss, so just ordered a Novation launchpad mini mk3. I think that will give me all the control I need for LP.

Is that the one LP supports out of the box? I know it’s supports a couple of midi controllers out of the box but can’t remember which ones. Sounds like you ve had a fair few over the years. I’ve got a couple of korg nanos which are pretty good, but plasticky and flimsy but do the job.

I think LP recognises all the latest Novation launchpad models out of the box, so having full RGB recognition is a nice touch. It’s super easy to map any controller to LP anyway, only takes a few mins with seemingly any modern controller.
I’ll post an improvised live jam one of these days!

A very slow progressing mix i played fully improvised. The Digitakt is still my favorite piece of gear to play livesets. Elektron really did a great job.

Anybody have any tips for using FX effectively for live improvisation? What are using and how are you using them?

I know this is a little while ago, but what settings did you find useful on the analog drive?

After trying out various effects units at the outputs of my Digitakt i’m back to concentrating on the internal delay and reverb. Sometimes i use a ehx platform compressor behind it to dial in some dirt with the drive knob. A kaoss pad quad was cool but i noticed that i was doing so much on the DT already that i wasn’t really using the kaoos pad too much.

But i wish there would be some good quality stereo multi fx box with some nice analog components out there.
