The improvised techno thread

For those doing improvised live sets, are you changing the kick sound much during a set?

For that matter, how much are you changing all drum sounds during a set?

I think you HAVE TO change the Kick sound. People will get bored hearing the same kick for hours.

Since I only use eurorack, I just tweak the Drums live, most of the time when they are muted

The kick is not that important if the other stuff is changing enough. But for “normal’” techno sets i change it at least every ten minutes. Same with the other sounds.
But there are no rules. Do what feels good to you. Otherwise you might end up sounding like the other dj’s/live acts. We also played banging 2 hour sets with 2 kick drums and people loved it.

And btw back in the days people would play live sets with a 909 and one or two synths and killed it. Just because we can use thousands of drum sounds in a set it doesn’t mean that we play a good set.

I have like 16 kits for 2h on my AR but it depends on the vibe and the people. Sometimes a harder Kick works wonders and sometimes you need a softer one

Here’s the recording from my latest solo liveset in Paris.
1h of raw loops with Octatrack, a 6u modular, a Tanzmaus and a couple pedals.

Total improvisation on the modular and tanzmaus, while the Octatrack provides a loose bed of security with kick/sub a few hats and the occasional OB6 sample of course.

Did this a few weeks ago, trying to get a working setup of being able to do live improv jams, It’s a different way of working for me but feel like i get much more done when i stick to recording a jam as too trying to plan out how my track should flow as i’ve no fucking idea.

Some Drumcode vibes around the 35’ mark. Nice nice :+1:t3: Would fit nicely in an Adam Beyer set

Lucas right? What a great set. I love your modular series too. So super inspiring. This week I bought a DFAM to complement the Analog Four and Digitakt. Here’s my first try with it.

Do you still use the RD-9?

unfortunately not. Bought an AR MK2 and got rid of the RD 9

The Digitakt taught me how to play fully improvised livesets in one pattern. First i hated the limitation of not having kits but now i embrace what i can do with this wonderful machine.

Nice, I’m enjoying how you take your time making small adjustments and give things time & space to breathe. I also watched the 3 vids you did around xmas/new year. I am wondering what you have mapped to the 2 midi controllers.
The launchControl XL, main sliders is obviously volume for the 8 audio tracks, but what about the 3 knobs, are they the same for all 8 tracks ? rev send, delay send, release amount or similar? also the 2 rows of 8 buttons , do you use them for reverse of loop or not really use them?

The Akai seems to be for rev/delay parameters mostly, anything else?
I guess you might be updating these and iterate over time.

Keep on Keepin’ on Kablehead

I suppose it’s a push to call this techno but this improvised set by @Calc recently was brilliant, I got to say I love the music this guy makes
