Ah yeah! Having Chebyshev as part of Filter+ outside of the Grid is a dream come true!
Maybe one of us is a Bitwig infiltrator
Mohahahahaha
(Actually we all are, and they have the unique feature to listen to us)
I like this pattern of investing in new Grid modules that then become accessible as device components for those of us who admire but rarely touch the Grid.
Honestly… I’m amazed but also lost with all these new modules, and I’m looking forward to the new presets that brilliant sound designers will produce for the rest of us.
I’m really enjoying the new mixer!
You can now select multiple channels and simultaneously adjust their volume, solo, mute, etc. This feature makes a major difference.
My only gripe, though, is that they’ve removed the big meters. I genuinely enjoyed looking at them. It’s become more akin to Ableton now.
I’m still missing new instruments to cover other synthesis types, such as physical modelling or advanced additive. They don’t seem too interested in improving on the stock instruments or workflow. It’s a pity because I really want to switch from Ableton, but the audio sources in Suite (stock instruments) cannot be dismissed.
Edit: (in case of anyone asks: I always try to produce just using stock instruments, I enjoy that limitation, I suppose it’s because I started making music with hardware and enjoyed its limitations)
Interesting, I have the big faders as my main template
I’m VERY close to moving to Linux full time, I contacted Bitwig and they restored the licence I asked to be deleted, which was extraordinarily kind of them.
In your opinion, could I rely 100% on what is included with Bitwig for all music making needs (light sample manipulation, mostly techno music) and leave the world of Microsoft spying and VST GAS (mostly) behind? The idea of having less options for GAS is extremely tempting in terms of a move to Linux. Diva, Audio Damage and Audiothing plugins all have native Linux versions - any other paid VSTs I’m happy to leave behind.
…kind of the same end goal here…
one linux machine that runs bitwig and nothing else but that…only connecting to the net once in a while for updates…
and sure u can cover all sorts of sonic missions already with nothing but bitwigs stock tools…
most of the time, we just don’t see how…too many ways to try all the wigs on all the bits…total overload and drowning in options…but in essence, it’s sooooo simple…kind of too simple to discover how simple it actually is…
just too much naked logic at first…easy to complain about not enough improoving on the stock instruments, if u just did’nt realize yet, it’s all just a click away and they cover it all indeed already…while everything beyond waits inbetween…nesting combos do all the trix…
no shame to say, i’m not smart enough for this most elegant level of truu simplicity…
Yeah, I meant improvement in the variety of stock instruments, most specifically synthesis types. The current stock instruments are all right by themselves and more than great in union with the modulation system and voice stacking
I fired up win a few months ago, now with Ubuntu studio, bitwig, acmt plugins, décent sampler and surge as only addon synth, I just feel good, really good, focussed and far away from useless new tools temptation, with no other needs than digging the grid and making sounds and beats… I’m no pro nor nerd, just hobbyst, and this prevent myself from burning my crédit card at every inspirationnal crisis.
I won’t look back, bitwig is way more than enough for my humble needs and every new release is a true joy for me.
It was absolutely liberative, now I have thé feeling that my laptop is finally my own instrument, and no more a leash. I believe that’s the point with free computer philosophy and it’s where artistic behaviour (and the fun) begins.
(By the way, my first post on this forum,
)
That’s a really inspiring response and has crystallised my decision in my mind, thanks.
@reeloy great minds think alike, perhaps. Good to hear it works as hoped. Will be ridding myself of the curse of Windows tonight.
Man I hope this Beta is stable because I really want to try it on a track I am finishing. At the filter automation stage now and I think a lot of these options are exactly the sauce I want to add in. The clipper before the filter in Filter+ looks so awesome.
Congratulations for your decision to run Bitwig on Linux!
And a periodical reminder of the #linux channel on Bitwig’s Discord in case you need help or are just looking for peers.
Audio quantization is the huge headline for me – for my use case this is by far the biggest update since I started using Bitwig over 2 years ago. I was thinking about dropping Bitwig and going back to Ableton because this was missing (yes, I know there are workarounds, but none of them are good) but now it’s finally here!
If they just add Audio pitch quantization next its as good as done for me
I’ll join the Discord at some stage, I hope I’ll get on without the need to seek help initially, but then I’ve probably jinxed myself lol. Thanks, though.
I’m super pleased with the rate Bitwig updates are letting me replace/simplify previous grid setups I’ve made. MSEGs let me ditch a truly convoluted 5-stage envelope I’d hacked together. Vowels looks like it will let me throw out a whole filter bank I was using for formant stuff. Same with Shred, and heck, if Sweep works out I might not even need to go to the grid for any of this. Going to feel good to shed that weight.
Looks like a nice update. I know these updates won’t always please everyone but I think Bitwig have stuck to their guns for years in terms of being a “different” kind of DAW and focusing on sound design, modularity, alternative ways to do things and not trying to mimc the others.
I think the new oscillator, filters and distortions will make great fun for sound design and pulling some stuff out of the Grid into “regular” devices seems cool, I hope this becomes more of a “build your own devices with the Grid” at some point.
I’m not sure I even understand what audio quantise does but if I can play with audio loops in new ways then I’m always a happy camper! I never gave the voice stacking a lot of attention, perhaps it’s time to dig in a bit.
I need to renew my plan when I’m back home and then I can have a play.
Just spent some time with the different algos in the Filter+ and yes! This is the filter plugin I have wanted. I personally think it far surpasses the Ableton AutoFilter, which is one of my all time favorites. The clipping mode plus the Character filters are just crazy awesome and just makes this thing into a monster. Ill continue to mess with it, but it looks like my go filter moving forward. Going to try the audio quantize on a drum break next.
Yes, really pleased with this update.
