The Best Tonverk Controller?

Hi people,

I never used a controler as I am kinda afraid about the midi science.
But I think I need something to Fade In and Out, Mute/Solo, Note Repeat and why not tweak some parameters if I know how to program it.

I was wondering: What do you use as a midi controller to accompany the Tonverk?

Korg NK2- cheap and replaceable. It’s got 1 knob, 1 fader and 3 buttons per channel. Max 8 channels. I got the knob as the breath controller, fader as mod wheel and 1 of the buttons as a momentary mute for each of the individual 8 tracks

Neuzeit Drop pairs well with Tonverk. It is extremely powerful, and as a result finding the right configuration for your purpose might well turn into a project on its own. Also, it is rather pricey.

I have no experience with the Tonverk specifically, but it’s got 8 main channels and that seems to map very closely to how I’ve got things set up for my other Elektron boxes.

Based on that, I highly recommend that you check out the Launch Control XL 3. I made a video showing how I’m leveraging it in my live performances:

Faderfox UC4 is ideal for Tonverk with its eight faders, knobs and buttons. I’m using two of these with TV, mainly to control performance macros. You could program them flexibly to do all the things you want to and more. I prefer them over something like Launch control or bigger Faderfoxes because they’re a lot smaller but not too small, and the 8x8 paradigm is so easy to build routings that are easy to internalize and build up muscle memory for performance. It’s also easy and almost fun to customize onboard without having to use a laptop.

I have mixed feelings about the LC XL3 (which mostly amount to ‘you get what you pay for’), but I’d add that it’s a good choice for someone who is afraid of MIDI controllers because the customisation software is very user-friendly.

Or do you have to buy separate power- and/or midi-adapter?

The Tonverk doesn’t act as MIDI host, so you’ll need to use a USB cable for power and a MIDI cable for CC. I have the MIDI cable hooked up to TV for power, you could also use a powerbank or laptop for that. What’s nice is that these controllers have MIDI TRS inputs and outputs and can merge MIDI that’s coming from DIN MIDI and/or USB.

My TVs best friend is the Launchkey Mini 37 MK4.

It has 8 knobs, 16 pads, and much better arp, scale and chord modes than the TV. As a dedicated controller for editing, there are better options. But as a versatile add-on for making music with TV, the LK Mini is perfect for my purposes.

Go to the official Faderfox website, it says exactly what comes with it. There’s definitely a MIDI TRS to DIN adapter included, as well as a UsB cable.

What are your concerns with it? I personally wish it supported aftertouch midi messages, but that’s the main thing. I wouldn’t mind it being a tad smaller (though the UC4 is too extreme in the other end instead).

Just wanna say that this is highly subjective . I think the UC4 has the perfect size, the faders are still a lot longer than say a Roland boutique and the knobs aren’t smaller than on Elektrons. I really appreciate how you can get so many knobs and faders in such a compact little device. It also has a cross fader that so many people are craving on any kind of hardware.

It’s partly the limitations of the customisation but mostly just the feel of the knobs. The design of the thing is beautiful, but the feel of using those knobs doesn’t live up to it. A bit too stiff, and I fear the knob caps getting that sticky feel over time. The knob acceleration options helped, but I still never feel that confident in dialling in a specific knob position quickly. I suppose it’s partly a side-effect of choosing endless encoders instead of pots, although of course there is no right answer when it comes to encoders vs pots, and encoders are more flexible at the cost of some feeling of precision for the user.

But I don’t mean “you get what you pay for” in a wholly negative way because you do get a lot for the money, and the DAW integration and MIDI i/o is great. There’s really no competition at that price range. My dissatisfaction with the knobs could be fixed through either LED light rings or more little screens (the little LEDs are appreciated though). I realise that would cost more, but Behringer managed it a million years ago (approximately) so surely it can’t be that costly.

The launch control does not have midi learn right? So anytime you want to change what the controller is doing you have to connect it to the PC software? Or you can update custom profiles without the software and change the CC value of a knob/button/fader so long as you know the CC value?
