It’s not like they didn’t know they had two products with almost the same name released at the same time. Does an ‘s’ at the end even matter ? I guess it helps that the two are worlds apart in function. It’s hard though for Waves to even get noticed when Wave is so white hot.
So now with the release of the Wave, along with its price and general characteristics, that fills in some things on three other GIPs in its same class. Note the narrowed down control bank with all these.
Neptune 80
Polyeight
STX
Not sure if the Polykobol may also be in with these too. ADDED : No it’s in the next class up from these.
I think it sounds sick.
For $100 that’s incredible.
I wish they’d sell sound modules without the keyboard, but I’ll take it
There is the chance of the core of the JT Mini being put into Eurorack, like they did with the Victor module. Behringer is obviously determined to be a significant Eurorack maker, and they’re in it for the long term, so this might give them another opportunity.
Oh good point.
Behringer is so close to getting me into modular. The EDGE was awesome and the Muteable clones+space effects are very tempting
I will be very careful about these mini series based on my experience with Pro VS Mini. Without any FX (in fact series of them), I found it very weak and toyish in terms of sound. All those videos with pedals, reverb, delays etc. kind of got me very excited initially…
Oh thanks for the warning, good point
Me and my wallet are waiting for:
- VCS3
- PRO-16
- POLYEIGHT
- 2-XM
I’m already dreaming of a 2x VCS3 + some strymon FXs setup!
just YES!
NEW FIRMWARE
- Five voice polyphony ( one more than before )
- Hold mode for the arp
- Simple Chord Mode that also runs with the arp
- Portamento
- Ensemble and Reverb effects engine
- Improved DCA Model
- Added preset patches
I like that he is using the Wave as a controller.

Wish they put the Midi jack on the back. Why do they persist in putting them on the top which gets in the way.
I don’t think it’s thick/deep enough .
There’s likely to be a $10 adapter if you need the lead to be more flush with the top.
That reverb sounds odd, I know its cheap but it sounds out of place in this device.
A useful and interesting observation. It’s definitely a trend for Behringer, they are moving very much to putting original new features together with the flavors and technologies of the originals.
In the LM Drum case, adding the sample capture and loading features is a good example of bringing along useful changes.
Another is the atrophy settings with the UB-Xa. They started on that route, perhaps in reaction to the modern Oberheims, but it got to be a whole thing for them, so in the latest release they allow you to save the atrophy settings with the patch, opening new directions with the sound design. It looks like they will add similar ideas to some of there other high end synth releases going forward.
The other thing with the UB-Xa is the poly-aftertouch. That started because they were working on a CS-80, ( the so called VS-80 ) and so once they had the p-at keybed ( done inexpensively with good quality, and modular ) no sense not adding that on to other high end synths. So you’ll see that enhancement showing up with more synths, as enhancement to the original.
And with the VS-80 it looks like they may break from the original, and change the interface with a mod-matrix. ( They also will likely have the atrophy feature there too. )
Whether the screen on the LM Drum fits in with these sorts of good enhancements, or is more of a side distraction, we have yet to see. The nice thing about screen graphics, is they can be relatively easily changed with a new firmware release.
I’ve noticed that too, and it does provide a good counter to the many naysayers in my estimation. I still think they make a number of poor (IMO at least) decisions in that regards, but the ratio of good to poor is improving all the time. A good example of this being the recent Grind which I thought was a really good combinations of various bits from their catalogue, that was a little let down by the additional sound engines from their Brains. Not that they’re bad, but if you compare the ‘BX7’ engines versus the final Plaits firmware DX7 engines, they’re quite inelegant in their implementation.
That said, it’s interesting to see how they’re evolving. I wouldn’t mind seeing if they took their Victor module and put it into the Crave/Edge type case along with the filter from their Pro-1. That would be quite the appealing proposition though perhaps unlikely given the Pro VS Mini. Equally fancifully, it would be interesting if they were to revisit their RD6 and give it a Modded-Out version inspired by the mods from the TR-608 - that would be quite the companion to the TD-3-MO and a nice way for people to get access to the unobtanium of the TR-608.
The number i saw was 15 from Plaits, with 9 they added.
From a recent article in Amazona on the Grind :
New engines through USB update
Behringer itself has announced that additional engines can be added via an update. Currently, 24 synthesis models are included. Three banks of ten engines are possible, so there are currently six engine slots available. It should also be mentioned at this point that the original Plaits currently has 24 engine slots.
Since naming those four the Producer Series and branching out from being only Moog in origin we will very likely see more colors of these. Fun to imagine the possibilities.
Loose parts they have around ( besides the catalog of components, including vacuum tubes at Cool Audio ) are things like a Pin Grid array, audio pitch identification to MIDI, digital mixer technology galore, whatever knowledge on FPGA audio they’ve gained working on the STX, various vocal processors from TC Helicon, and all sorts of odds and ends lying around, like two string synths, the Solina, and VC340, strange hardware drum engines like the Syncussion, the RD-78, various effects pedals, and who knows what from side experiments in back rooms while churning out prototypes
They also talked at one point about manufacturing and backing a few crowdfunded startup ideas.
EDIT : VS340 => VC340
Feels like a “Rings into Clouds” semimodular would be an easy win.
Super popular combo, would probably fit nicely in the Edge/Spice/etc. form factor, open source code just waiting to be used. Maybe they could fit a little contact mic surface on there a la Ears/Mikrophonie to complete the experience.
They have the Radar Eurorack.
