That Syntakt Sound

New vid with some SY Tone sound design for atmospheric FM techno drone beds

Another buddy came by last night and did a spoken word piece over one of my older Syntakt jams

Wanted to make some more Syntakt-only things, so here’s the classic C64 SID tune ā€œTerra Crestaā€ from 1985 - using 3xSY Chip plus the FX block filter and distortion.

Three sketches.

The two first ones grew out of the Science Labs.

The third one is a ripoff of Datassette’s Fever Dream track, and it’s an attempt to achieve a proper retro bandpass filtered electro bass. I sacrificed an LFO on the bass track to get an exponential envelope for volume.

Straight from the Syntakt. Something’s wrong with my audio interface, apologies for the occasional boiling in the right channel.

Stellar work, as always. Those are so inspiring to listen to, but also to work out the ST. I’m going out of town for Ā«julebordĀ» and I dread I will miss few days away from the machine:)

Update on my Ā«ST through Monotron delayĀ» sample pack - I have 100 highly custom samples already and I’m only on my first couple of projects (swarm, alloy). It sounds dusty af. I’m also accepting proposals on how to name it:)

I’ve been getting frustrated by the limit on 72 parameter locks and realized I’ve been underusing the other available mod sources - velocity mod and LFO. Here’s something I wrote today where I challenged myself to use no p-locks other than velocity. I did cheat a little bit by p-locking the LFO to trigger on the first beat because it drives me insane having the pattern not sound the same every time I play it.

Not cheating in the least! That’s the point of these sequencers!
And don’t hold back on the other modifiers. Aftertouch, modwheel, I think I remember even breath control(?) can all have four mod destinations.
These things can be super pliable!

I have a knobby midi controller that I keep meaning to setup to do macros with aftertouch and etc and I just never get around to it. I’ll try to mess with it this weekend because I think it would unlock a lot of performance options.

Thanks @mishpult! We have to find a time and date to hook up soon.
Take it easy on the Julebord! I often sneak a little Elektron in my suitcase when I’m on work trips

@Kingvikar I like the minimalist tunes you churn out these days. Do you record p-locks during real time record? The few times I’ve ran out of p-locks it’s when I hit real time record and just tweak the knobs a little randomly. Lock memory fills up pretty quickly then.

I don’t real time record very often, but I do a lot very subtle p locking that probably isn’t very impactful on the finished song, I’m tryna to break some bad work flow habits for sure. I also didn’t know you could delete a single p-locked parameter from a trig until someone here mentioned it so stuff was getting eaten up from me bumping the wrong knob on accident.

I agree it’s tedious deleting single p-locks. Would be great to be able to delete all p-locks of a certain type on one track so that you could free up a complete p-lock ā€œlaneā€.

Some thinking out loud on ā€œp-lock deleteā€ workflow…:

There’s another way to delete p-locks. Hold the trig(s) in question and press the PLAY button. This doesn’t only delete the selected locks however, but ALL locks for that specific trig. I guess you could just as well double-press the trig (to remove and re-enter it on the same step). Not sure if the note value stays with the trig+play clearing function.

What I sometimes do if I have several trigs with the same locked parameter to be removed, is to remove the ā€œoffendingā€ lock on the first trig, and copy the whole trig to the others. That only works if the other locks on that specific trig are identical to the ones you want to copy though.

It’s also possible to copy a sequence of trigs. For example if you’ve cleared the locks for 4 trigs, and have the same trig sequence on the next page, you can copy/paste the woel sequence to save some button presses.

If I understand correctly, each PLOCK can be presented as follows

I would say Elektron can even have a PLOCK browsing page displaying all such data for a certain lock. On that page, we can see values for each step and manage them in various ways.

For example - Randomize values on already defined steps or ā€œeuqlideanā€ them somehow
Dreams, dreams… :grinning:

My best late 00s early 10s Minus Techno impression with the Syntakt and a bit of compression.

When you hit clear on a sequence in a sonicware groovebox it asks if you want to clear notes, parameters, or both. I don’t know why this is hard for elektron but it’s the clear easy answer.

hot damn!

the snare in the second track sounds so good. soft and sharp & breathy at the same time. good stuff!

and the datassette track is awesome, i love the way he has those signature basses of his dialed in. especially on Fever Dream B. You came pretty close to the sound in the high notes of the bass ( imo )

damn…you are probably going to make me re-buy the syntakt, such a cool device

Thank you! The snare in the second track is actually CY Alloy.

Hurry up gettig a Syntakt now and come and join us in the Science Labs :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

That is so unfair of you. That is exactly the sound I have always wanted. Give me your brain so I can see how it’s done. Love this. Keep it up.

Stumbled on a cool little groove while FM-ing the chord machine and using portamento.

mindblown by this.

More SY Chord fun. Turns out FM-ing it and then filtering it down can give this cool almost downsampled feel which is great for raw techno grooves imo
