That Syntakt Sound

Thank you :slightly_smiling_face:

Wow, all this from only a Syntakt? Impressive sound design!

This is amazing. Great work. How did you get the phaser effect on the pads? Is that a resonant filter sweep controlled by a LFO? Syntakt desperately needs a Modulation effect of some kind but you seem to have been able to work around this somehow.

Thanks! Yes, straight from the Syntakt, single take, no post-processing :slightly_smiling_face:

Thank you! The phaser effect is the single-band notch filter on the FX track, frequency swept with an LFO. There’s also a dual-band notch mode which sounds even more pronounced. They both sound pretty nice I think. I ran the whole mix through the FX track, but the notch filter frequency is only modulated in the parts without drums.

This is so good I’m having a hard time believing this is ST only. Easily one of the best ST-only things I’ve heard.

That is a GREAT tip, can’t believe I’ve never tried this before - thanks!

Wow, thanks for the kind words! If you wanna check it out, I just uploaded the project file in another thread. The «BoC» patterns are in bank D.

@MuttBeats Happy to help!

I so want to like my Syntakt but it’s out for maybe 10 minutes then back in the box… the machine itself is perfect for anything but Cymbals and Hats… these are a complete FAIL for me mainly because I’m a 909 not 808 style hats fan. The rest of the machines (analog) etc are just fine.

SY Alloy is bad indeed, but I feel that the analog vintage hat is nice and somewhat 808-like. You can use noise effects in digital machines or configure modulations to get much better CH’s than Alloy.

It’s the one machine on ST I struggle with. I’ve managed to use it for a (kinda) shaker sound (slow Amp attack, resonant bandpass) but it’s not great. Definitely the biggest weak spot on the ST for me (well, that and the lack of a Chorus FX).

SY Alloy has an annoying harshness to it by default. I find that it helps using one of the EQ modes of the filter to kill the most annoying frequency bands and make it more useable. Set it to maximum cut, medium bandwidth (eg EQ Mode 3) and sweep the frequency until you find the problematic area.

Quick question: is there another device/groovebox/synth like the syntakt?

In that, it isn’t a sampler (obviously) but it is easy/fast to dial in various sounds on the fly without presets?

Model:cycles is its direct ancestor. And also very good!

I absolutely swore by the Syntakt, then I bought a new RYTM MK II a few weeks ago and realized the difference is immense.

Plus you get the mono sampler. Which can live on each pad WITH the existing analog sound.

In my mind its the closest you’re going to get to all-in-one Analog box from Elektron.

is there a difference in the analog engines?

There are multiple threads on the differences, please use the search function.

Indeed. If Rytm’s analogue voices had all the Syntakt’s features, I’d sell my ST

Why? I dont like drum machines without individual outputs. Syntakts positives outweigh the negatives enough to warrant keeping it anyway

thx, so they are not the same, that’s what I wanted to know without details

I did the reverse, I’ve had both AR MK1 and MK2. At first I was annoyed by the fact that there is no analog classic clap on the Syntakt, but honestly that’s not a big deal. You have the same amount of slots/voices for analog snare, kick, raw engines, plus everything else. Those are the bread and butter of the Rytm imo.

The most interesting ones to me personally are the same, except for the analog clap. So you should check the manuals and decide for yourself

With Syntakt you can get a 909 sounding analog kick, a 808 sounding analog snare, a 808 (ish) sounding analog open hat plus an analog bassline. And then you still got 8 slots, loads of digital machines, an FX track and so much more. The Syntakt is unrivaled imo, I’m happy I changed my mind and got it again. Didn’t realize it’s potential because I was using it mostly for synths instead of drums.
