Teenage Engineering TP-7 Tape recorder

:joy: they would surely be devastated knowing that

Exactly.

I’ve just got one new at a slightly reduced price - I recorded ‘frogs’ … I’m going to make a wave table out of Frogs …. This makes me happy. I have to say it’s a bit of a ‘design classic’ in the making I feel.

that is why I have more Elektron boxes than TE boxes. Economy of scale.

To those of you who have one , are you able to confirm/deny that if you record with the internal mic - it picks up the sound of the motor wheel rotating ( I get a single slight click each rotation) when recording - mine does and just want to know if I need to swap it :grimacing: - I can confirm it doesn’t make a sound when recording with the motor wheel function/ rotation turned off in the menu

i can confirm that i can record with the internal mic and have no sound from the motor when its rotating. you should totally swap yours. this is the 5th time i’ve heard of someone having this issue…

Thank you for the clarification , I did think it was ‘weird’ / faulty.

when I first got mine it did this exact same thing, I swapped it for another at perfect circuit and it works fine though the rocker is a bit wobbly so I might have to trade it back. It does not affect the functionality of the device but c’mon its $1500 i need one in perfect condition.

Yes It does not seem unreasonable to expect the device to be 99.9% perfect given the price of entry. Thank you for your clarification on the motor issue .

I hope in the future TE can add some sort of 4track usb-c sync recording from Op1 field to TP-7… that way I can add individual compression, eq, and send effect on the 4 Op1 tracks inside Tx-6 then record the results of the mix back into Op1 field via Main out of Tx-6 for further arranging or addition of elements… I love the sound of this workflow, it’s just a dream right now though.

Can some one enlighten me on how the pitch works inside Tp-7? On the Op1 field I can clearly tell that adjusting the global pitch is by semi tones, but on the Tp-7 it’s displayed as percentage. How much percentage is 1 semi tone?

Agreed — it’s such an obviously useful (and seemingly possible?) functional tie in that I’ll actually be pissed if this doesn’t at some point become doable.

wow this sounds like an insanely nice workflow. is this how you are imagining it?

step 1: op1f (4 tracks) —usb—> tp-7 (record 4 tracks to memory)
step 2: tp-7 (4 tracks playback) --usb–> tx-6 (mix/eq 4 tracks) --3.5mm–> op1f tape (1 stereo track)

i have one more follow up question around the current state of the tx-6 + op1f pair:

  • when i connect them together with usbc, i am able to send audio in both directions, which is great. but what is weird is that when the audio goes out of the op1f into the tx-6 via usb, the vu meters dont indicate which channel(s) the audio is on so i cannot apply any of those fader/eq/etc effects. is this just the current state of their compatibilty or am i missing something? thanks in advance!

i also notice that when i send audio out via usb, the audio is also coming out of the op1f built in mic simultaneously. unlike when i send audio out of the op1f via line out, which only sends audio on the line out and NOT in the built in speaker. is this also y’all’s experience too?

sorry im blowing up this thread lol. im doing some poking around and was wondering if anyone here might know when the tp-7 will be in stock again in the usa TE webstore?

Not what you asked, but B&H and Detroit Modular appear to have some. :innocent:

wow thanks, this is good. im so temped to grab one of those but im going to try to wait it out until the next “batch” directly from TE so that:

  1. warranty fulfillment is without a middleman
  2. their manufacturing has improved a lot lately and i think the newer batch has a lower chance of having a dud (speculation but id wager its mostly true)

Just want to rant / counter the “they’ve been improving their manufacturing a lot lately”. No they haven’t. This is unfounded speculation.

I purchased my first TP-7 brand new from Night Life a few months ago. Worked fine for two weeks then the power/volume knob flaked out and started internally grinding and randomly jumping volume around and turning on and off. Returned it.

I heard these rumors about improved manufacturing (with no actual source) so waited out the lack of stock anywhere with the theory the new stock would have the QA issues worked out. Finally new stock started rolling out. So I purchased my second TP-7 in December from Chicago Music exchange. Immediately had the other common isssue of the rotating disc hiccuping every revolution adding a dip/warble to playback on predictable interval. Immediately returned it.

Still really wanted one of these devices so bought a third one from the last of the new stock at Russo Music a few weeks ago. Brand new again of course. Also had a milder but clearly evident dip/warble on every rotation. Also now that I’ve had it 3 weeks the on/off knob is again grinding internally like my first one.

I sent videos of all three issues to Teenage Engineerings support. They confirmed none of those (including the warbly playback) are expected and encouraged return or warranty claim. Well I was so close to the return window I kept it with my theory being I’ll send it in for warranty claim and require it be entirely fixed.

So I want to be really clear. I like TE. I own OP-1, Field, TX-6 and EP-133. I absolutely adore the TP-7…

… but I wouldn’t actually recommend the TP-7 purchase to my worst enemy. Between my 3 for 3 junk experience, to the countless videos on YouTube and posts even in this thread, it’s clear this thing has serious hardware defects and not even the most basic QA (play back anything at the factor FFS). Anyone who thinks the next “batch” will have anything improved is living in a fantasy world. Buy at your own risk and have the bankroll and patience to buy a half dozen of them to find a fully working one and even then be prepared to warranty claim it at some point. If you’re good with that, go for it.

I want to have a reason to buy the TP-7, I’m sure not all are plagued with issues as some people on here have some from the original run and haven’t mentioned issues. Still, your experience, the price tag, and its current feature list are so perplexing to me.
I can’t understand how anyone has had the funds to buy one of these for its current use cases.
I mean that with no disrespect, I just literally cannot get there, and I’m an EASY easy sell on TE stuff.

OP-1F? Immediately,
KO II? Sign me up
Op-Z in 2018? Yup!
TX-6? 100%

I want the TP-7 to make sense I just can’t figure it out.

i really appreciate your insight here. it gives me significant pause. i have heard their manufacturing has been improving but ive also learned that their products are manufactured in diff places so maybe only some are being given that special treatment for improvement.

yeah i too really want a tp-7 but i wouldn’t want to have this back and forth experience. my plan as of now is to wait for the latest batch to be done and then decide to either wait for early buyers experience to surface or just go for it. i also will only buy from TE directly, the less middlemen the better. in my case the one time i had to return a product i had the new one within 2 weeks directly from TE, very easy logistically.

your insight is very very helpful for and i do thank you very much for sharing all these details.
