I feel sorry for Jeff Mills, releasing other peoples records under his own name accidentally, releasing someone else’s demo under his own name accidentally, collaborating on crappy products like this also presumably accidentally, ol Jeff seems a bit accident prone.
j/k
This would cool for putting lofi hip hop beats onto. The novelty of having them on record and the quality would suit the style.
That’ and making battle records for the portablist scene and 7” turntables
Yeah, or some ambient drones, or other weird vaporwave type stuff.
Or you could be the next Jandek. Lots of possibilities.
One thing it might be cool for is making custom scratch discs as @muzka said, other than can’t really see the point of it. It’d be ok using with a cheap stylus like PT10 uses, cheap enough to replace.
Well yeah. Other than as a toy for kids, the Gakken (et al) one was kinda pointless. So why would teenage engineeri… oh wait up
You need two then!
Special Bandcamp release. Requires two turntables. One for the left channel, one for the right
I’ve been thinking this for months, still not bitten the bullet. Some people use different solvents to get cleaner cuts, so they are usable sonically, but I’m dubious about the mechanical consistency of the thing being a kit. Especially cos I’d want to cut a skipless groove loop… I’d love to hear if anyone trys this.
If you are serious about cutting dub plates, checkout the Lathe Trolls. Lots of good practical information. They don’t seem to be discussing the PO-80 at all.
Sure this a rebrand of a current Gakken product. However, looking around, a lot of shops online have it for anywhere from $135 on up, and many for more when shipping is applied.
What I found really interesting, is that TE sells the blank records in a pack of 10 for $20, when Juno sells a pack of 5 for $14 + shipping, and Turntable Training Wax sells a pack of 5 for $16 + shipping. So go TE for the cheaper records.
I’m also wondering, does TE standard 1 year warranty apply to this as well? If so, that would be something many shops don’t offer. I only found a couple that offered a 30 day warranty.
Never thought I’d read that line!
I’m having the hardest time believing that this is so cheap considering that T.E. keychain cost $899.
lol never thought I would write that. Although, I did find their slimline cables did end up cheaper (at least for me) when compared to some others out there. Either way, both rare
Apparently when Portishead were recording Dummy, they’d have beats pressed to vinyl then kick them around the floor and resample and chop them. That’s the first thing I thought of when I saw this.
Pretty Lights did something similar for a Color Map of the Sun.
However, Portishead.
I think this whole thing is an interesting concept but the sonic quality of the demos on TE’s page didn’t grab me. Still, could be super inspiring for some to see their music on wax.
most readily available would be old cd’s in my collection
cd’s have already been proven to work with various diy lathe cutters and the cut cd plays on traditional turntables too
Heh so it’s just a brand mark slapped onto an existing device
Looks cool, but it feels like it’s going to be a cheap toy to be honest.
It’s only 4 minutes. A 4 minute ambient drone is 10x better than a 40 minute ambient drone though, so that’s a feature!
