Teenage Engineering OP-Z

Wouldn’t it be great if configurator could store banks of user samples…

They had a sale in December and I added the rumble module, and 3 roll up bags. What they sent instead was their modular bag, 2 patches and a poster.

It took a week of emails where they ask for pictures of the package and items before for they confirmed a new shipment. That took another week to arrive.

Their support is not my favorite experience.

*on topic:

As for the OP-Z, mine has worked well since day 1. I bought it used with the ZM-1 oplab. It has the tiniest of bend that’s not noticeable without close inspection.

My intention was to use it on the go, but then the pandemic hit and I don’t have as much go time as I used to.

I still use it because it’s the easiest device to grab and play with. IMO it’s worth the full price especially with the OPlab module and eurorack integration.

The rumble pack is gimmicky but fun.

I used the line module for the first time yesterday and I love it for send fx, but it’s admittedly redundant because if I like what I hear, I would need to record it but my tools for that already have external sends (1010music blue/black boxes). So I look at it as something fun to quickly and minimally experiment with and I’m cant complain.

That would be cool and even better if you could store different saves to load back into the OP-Z as needed.

Sadly, this might be one of the things that gets created by fan users long after these are no longer produced.

I like the OP-Z, but it’s been tough to use it for ‘proper’ music production given the lack of stem exports. Recently some genius put together this bit of software which lets you record the patterns in multi-track form which is a game changer! Details in the video.

Shout out to @darenager for your double trig fix tip!

A year after suggesting it I tried using some isopropanol by dabbing some q-tips with it and stroking it around the buttons, I waited 15 mins and lo and behold it worked!

I couldn’t step enter a sequence without the Rec button double trigging and resetting the step rec to the first step before this and now it works flawlessly!

So glad for this fix!

I used it also and shared with others who had equally good results so thanks again from me :grinning:

I did it a couple days ago too, made a big difference. Thank you for the tip!!

Being able to send only a track or two as send effects had really made a bigger difference then I thought it would… I always thought it sounded pretty good on it’s own then messing with the outcome… but now the whole track can sound so much bigger and wider without messing with midi and other synth’s or stuff… really loving the new module… I wish this was the first one and I really want a analog filter module now like when the idea was leaked… I hope they will still think about doing that…

I want to understand this more! I don’t quite get what you’re saying is happening, but it sounds awesome. Tone: sincere.

Is there a shortcut to send the reverb and delay also to that Line Out? Can’t figure it out.

It sends only the dry signal. I wanna use that for sampling my OP-Z while monitoring with headphones

I just hooked a Launchpad Pro mk3 to my OP-Z with the Line Module. What a great combo! Pressure-sensitive pads, chord and scale modes, plus the OP-Z sequencers.

I bet there’s some fun to be had with the custom midi mode, but the straight defaults are great. I can’t get the LP and OP-Z to talk over USB midi, but tbh this is just as easy, because you need a powered hub to do USB between them.

Yeah, I wish LPPmk3 had a low power model where a OP-Z could provide it with enough power, or hopefully the next set of Launchpads will come with internal batteries like the Circuits have. Having a single USB-C port :-1:

I have a Korg nanokey studio which is a great pair with OP-Z to expand the interface.

On the plus side, they both use the same TRS midi standard, so it’s just a 3.5mm audio cable between them.

why are people buying the OB-4 without it having overdub looping

I don’t get it, did anyone ask for it, is TE thinking about it… why would you want it without overdub looping

It doesn’t have a line out either so I guess it doesn’t really matter lol. All of the features that aren’t the Bluetooth speaker / radio part of the devices are basically toys in my opinion. The speaker itself is what you’re there for and it sounds fantastic.

Just read in the manual that you can still use the Screen button to select inputs. It’s a special setting in the config file:

legacy_input_select
true / false
enable input selection when holding screen as an additional alternative to shift on i/o track. note: use as quick access to not have to switch track.

The effects are sadly only on the main outputs

hello,

I recently got an OPZ but pretty sad with it’s built in speaker quality. Wasn’t expecting much but wasn’t expecting this either.

I’ve even took a video and a recording to show to comparison. Is this normal or should I ask for an exchange?

Built In:

Same loop recorded through Garageband (and headphones)

Hard to say for sure, as depends on how you recorded it, but you should be able to hear all the instruments, even bass and kicks, although it is as expected a bit “tinny”.
