Teenage Engineering OP-XY

Those cubic boxes look like thr EP-133 boxes

Imagine this in a synth:

This thing can be huge

TE always manages to get pretty left-field so I’m not going to assume it’s a “normal” synth and doesn’t have anything to do with video or an XY pad, but the teasers and the language are all things that could just be related to sound design. A lot of terms used in audio processing are also used for video as well, like saturation, amplitude, phase, etc.

Vectorscopes can be used to compare stereo audio signals and the Dimension synth engine on the OP1-F kind of approximates this by representing the sound as a Lissajous figure that you can change by adjusting the “stereo” knob. The Moog Animoog Z has a similar kind of representation Animoog Z

I would be surprised if this isn’t a synth that is building on and expanding the concepts in the Dimension synth. TE does surprise though. Personally hoping it is in the Kaoss Pad effects vein or it has some very unique video capabilities (OP-Z videolab is fun but a pretty limited novelty unless you actually design and program in a bunch of original art in Unity).

Also I remember the OB-4 teaser campaign, and even though the OB-4 is cool and unique in many ways, that campaign made it seem WAY CRAZIER than a Bluetooth speaker with a recording ability and a built in mantra/metronome, I was expecting a super weird and original instrument like SOMA tends to make.

Images on a vector scope would arise from darkness…

Still not sure about that German copy though

this thing is gonna be bonkers

and yet, i feel at peace without a whiff of gas in my body. this is nirvana

I think it’s going to be a portable, musical, centerpiece of the lineup, that has “video sampling” capabilities and can interact with TE or non TE instruments via USB/Bluetooth MIDI and beyond.

I’d imagine it’s square(ish), most real estate taken up by an interactive (perhaps multi-touch MPE screen) with the ability to be played as its own instrument but also to be played as a part of a fuller TE setup.

Probably eye-candy for the social feeds as well.

Possibly the Holy Bible Teenage Engineering Version?

If this isn’t a new OPZ… people might be bummed.
Maybe a OPZ thing that you can modulate by moving it around on an XY plane.

It’s boxer shorts, I can feel it. My instinct is strong about this one.

Dreams come true if this is a video sampler.

You have finally ascended to GAS nirvana

A bit OT about the OP-Z workflow

As you mention the Elektron workflow is a lot clearer with its 4x16 bar system.
Ive had the OP-Z since launch and i also had a really rough 6 months with it as well in the beginning. I also thought 16 steps was to little and just slowing down the track speed wasnt enough to extend a sequence because i lost the granularity of that sequence.

It was only untill i realized the true power of step components that i finally gelled with the OP-Z.
Once i threw the notion of 4x16 out the window and fully accepted the transdimensional workflow of step components, then that was the moment i started to really love the device.
You have to set aside normal grid/tracker 4x16 sequenceing and fully invest in what step components offer.

the most crucial ones for really opening up a sequence is Pulse, Hold and Jump, these can really transofrm a sequence.

Maybe it’s just a kaossilator kind of thing with a pad that allows you to quickly program the track of choice (you know, x= steps, y=velocity or any parameter of choice) of any length up to the number of lights that fit in the pad (16? 32?) and doubles as punch-in fx controller. You know a bit of a toy but not really a toy, in the playful TE style. I have no idea how they would fit in the sequencing depth of the Z, but maybe they just won’t.

Top of my wish list for any companies new release is an interactive affordable video synth/performer, that and a hands on performance mixer.

You d be happy if it was video/visual related

I know Jesper Kouthoofd and @te-david are watching this thread. Come on guys, give your most loyal customers here are little hint at what we are waiting for. We need more bait.

Personally I hope it is music related, but would be happy for all you other folks to get some visual synthesis hardware thing as it is missing from the market.

I might be reading into it too much but after watching David’s latest story here: https://www.instagram.com/djbogdonit/ , the sound in it seemed strange. Anyone tried some audio steganography or running it through a vectorscope? Frequency map didn’t give anything away but maybe there’s some morse code in the peaks?

Am I going full conspiracy theorist here?
