Teenage Engineering OP-XY

Not sure how I didn’t connect that :))

I think this is an even older reference in particular the combination of the OG OP-1 and Octatrack, therefore it was meant to be THE synth to get samples from. :potted_plant:

Even today, the DTII and OP-1 field is probably my favourite combo.

How do you use them together? You just sample op1 sounds into digitakt? I feel op1f and loopy pro is my favorite combo. But I have a digitakt 2 and am curious how to unlock the magic combo

The most important thing to me is that I can connect them with one USB cable so that I can easily transport the pair around the flat and use it wherever (using a powerbank to power the DT, and the op-1 battery basically lasts almost forever). Also important is that both are dedicated, tactile music devices without any distractions. Since both send and receive audio over USB, and OP-1 acts as a host, you can record and audition anything back and forth while also maintaining MIDI sync, meaning I can record performances straight to a tape track, sample into Digitakt, and/or I can just sound design and make loops on the OP-1 which can in turn also be sampled into the DT, or just played synced with it. A lot of options in general, and practically easy + once set properly, it works immediatelly and every time just by turning the devices on.

The settings I use:

  • OP-1 sends clock and transport
  • OP-1 set to audio input of USB with gain set to +6db
  • DT is where headphones are plugged in
  • DT receives transport and clock
  • DT USB audio in gain set to +12db

Yeah, you essentially have a 4(8) track tape recorder and a powerful sequencer.

Imho this seems to be one of the greatest combos, but also sadly really expensive. I kinda hoped the move would do something similar but nah, neither is the sequencer fleshed out fully nor can it do audio tracks (and tape emulation is another topic)

I’m not denying this, but if you already have both and love the workflow on both, it is golden.

I thought it was some dude on this forum claiming to have intel on the launch of what was to be the model:cycles.
I actually love that this word meme is becoming an urban legend in itself.

I’m still rocking OG OP-1 and OTmk1 - I’m so 2014.

That was stated here as the most powerful duo back then, I guess not a lot has changed (maybe more analogue to choose😃).

But yeah - bring on the Tonwerk XY thingy - still looking forward to Thursday.
Oh and I’m still learning Digitone 1:)

Interestingly Ableton was one of the first to like the instagram post TE put up…

I like the sequencer idea the most out of what was made up, I don’t get what the display is indicative of still tho. I guess a sequencer for the op/z and display and sequencer and something for op1 would be cool

Unlikely it would just be an add on too - I’m assuming the price will be between $500-800

I didn’t mind not having a screen on the OP-Z. Once you use it enough, the screen isn’t needed and would just be a useless distraction.

I would love to see this combo in action! @SonWu recently streamed an excellent beat-making video with the DTII after some fantastic op1f sessions. I highly recommend them if you’re a fan of either.
Maybe you could combine the two for a future one, Son? If anyone could do it, it’s you!

I know the field series was designed for recording in nature, but it would be cool to have a desk-based solution to create a comprehensive ecosystem. Something to seamlessly integrate their products. I occasionally find myself drawn to walled gardens if done right.

It would be awesome if the XY was something like what I imagine a TE modern take on the Tenori-On would be like with the step components. Maybe a 16 by 16 grid with the ability to run 16 sequences all visible on the same grid running whatever direction you want in the xy axis and interacting with each other using Boolean logic when the play heads intersect.

Thank you very much!

We’ll see…It’s all about which workflow is most appealing in the moment.

Perhaps OP-XY videos soon

A bona fide tease!

I hope a son wu demo means it’s an audio device not video…

Oh…I don’t have any inside-info!
I am just saying that I’ll likely get it, if it is an OP-Z follow up.
