Teenage Engineering OP-XY

Satisfied here, happily making music and excited for future updates. Haven’t had many issues but also haven’t felt the need to cram it with samples yet. My main wishes are that song/scene mode were better implemented, which isn’t a bug issue it’s a fundamental workflow thing. And at least 1 per track effect to bring the somewhat basic synth engines to life/glue perc tracks together. Re:cost, I can accept it because there is still nothing this portable with these features, and also boutique company vs inflation :man_shrugging:

Ah, I see what you’re saying. I guess you’d have to play the note live like you said. I’ll double check tomorrow but you’re probably right.

So i have a gig tonight and Im only bringorna the OP-XY and a controller.

I mainly use the controller to switch scenes and to use it in parts of the set which I know I need fade audio in and out (the last part of the recording below)

It’s a 45 minute set which comprises of 85 scenes I have 8 patterns on two tracks, 7 on 1, 6 on another one and the rest is 4 patterns, so there is still som more room left if I want to expand it further.

My main takeaways from making this set is that handling scenes is a PITA because the next scene defaults to scene 1, so when you are on scene 84 and want to construct the next scene you have to change all the patterns to the last scenes patterns which can be hard to remember which ones where used.

Brain m2 settings are unique for each scene and while I think this is positive on a whole it’s a bit of a pain that you have to go into m2 and change the settings for every scene change.

The general making of the set was a really enjoyable experience, it was very easy to reuse patterns and give them new life when you started combining new brain and punch in fx patterns and as a whole I feel like the set is cohesive while not feeling stale/samey.

This recording is only rehearsal so there are some mistakes made due to me trying different things with tape track and so on
I’m kind of spamming the tape track but that’s more to get a feel for where I can use it. Hopefully I won’t spam it as much tonight, but who knows what can happens when I’m in it.

I like my OP-XY a little bit more every day. At first I was frustrated because of many crashes when using homemade multisamples, but since the last update these issues have completely disappeared. A few days ago I had a issue with the pitchbend, but it turned out to be due to a failed calibration. Of course I miss a few things. Mainly quality of life improvements and a few options I know from the OP-Z. But I can live with that and the further development of the OP-XY has only just begun.

The only thing that bothers me is my guilty conscience that I have spent so much money on a single device that I only use for hobby purposes.

Dont worry about it. It’s only money. At least we’re all having fun. If it wasnt music devices, it could be expensive cameras, watches, cars or whiskey.

After I ordered the OP-XY, I added some Behringer gear for the same amount into the shopping cart. Just for fun. Holy cow, for the same money I would have gotten a fully equipped retro setup.

Hope you will make a video of it! Good luck

It may be just a hobby but if it helps you make music and that nourishes your soul then it’s worth it.

…as long as you’re not getting into serious debt in the process

Will probably only post snippets like this…

I plan on making a seperate YouTube live set video though and put the project up on Patreon.

I totally feel you on the part about pouring that much money into one device. The whole exercise of comparing the value dollar for dollar compared to other stuff, such as you did with the Behringer-filled basket, really puts things into perspective.

What ultimately made you pull the trigger despite pricetag hesitance?

I’ve sold a lot of gear in the last two years because I’ve realized that I have a lot more fun when I concentrate on just a few devices. I’m simply done with large and complex setups. Conversely, this means that the few devices have to cover as many of my needs as possible.

The OP-XY fulfills so many of my wishes that I bit the bullet and put this huge pile of money on the table.

This is such a pain. I often use more than 2 drum tracks and a lot of step components to create generative melodies and it’s so annoying to forget to change this and all of the sudden your step components are playing in the wrong key.

It would be great if any track using the drum synth type was defaulted to off on all scenes, not just tracks one and two.

This set is really great by the way. I really wish you could change projects on the fly though so this didn’t have to be one single huge project - that’s not how I like to write on the XY.

Do you think that TE is capable of fixing all those bugs? I don’t want it to sound nasty, that’s an honest question.

A really good overview …

Can I ask how the scene switching works via the midi controller? Is it using the CC 85?

Maybe we can wait until April!

Yes exactly, i think its CC 85.

Ive mapped it to a button to fire off a value 127 i think in reality it just need a value over 0

Not mine:

Imo the best demo on YT so far but the person who made this video sold his XY bc they didn’t liked the UX

This is a great demo! The first track gives Squarepusher vibes. Jay Sherman voice—“Now I want one more than ever!”
